Separated migrant families could take 2 years to reunite by Graysen G.

Federal agents could take up to two years to reconnect immigrant families who were separated at the southern United States border. After a federal judge asked how this problem was going to be solved, it was revealed that the Trump administration most likely separated thousands more children from their parents than previously thought. The families in questions were separated before the ‘zero-tolerance’ immigration policy was announced. To identify these families, the government has said a statistical analysis would be applied to 47,000 children who were referred to the Office of Refugee Resettlement and later released. The government would then go through each case record and attempt to reconnect the separated children to their parents.

The process would take a minimum of a year and a half to complete, but could take upwards of two years. The reason this could take so long is because the United States Customs and Border Protection did not collect specific data on migrant families before April of 2018. The longer these children are separated from their families, the more physiological trauma they will endure. This amount of carefully identifying over almost 50,000 cases could greatly overwhelm the United States Public Health Service Commissioned Corps resources. Around 2,700 children have been reunited with their families or situated based on the parents wishes. However a large group of migrant families have not been able to reconnect due to the ineffective tracking system in the United States.

Do you think immigration laws have deterred immigration? What do you think about so many families being separated for immigrating to America? Is there a better solution to reconnect these families than the ones listed above?

  1. I dont think immigration laws have deterred immigration. Some of those people are running for something. They are trying to seek asylum but cant. I dont think we should have ever separated families. That causes a lot of trauma, and it was unethical.

  2. I think our actions as a whole in America have deterred all people from wanting to be in America. I think it is disgusting to have so many children torn away from their parents and even more so to blame the parents when we were the ones to dig this hole. I think instead of tearing children away from their families we should help them to become useful members of society instead of treating them as second class humans who do not deserve our help.

  3. Immigration laws have clearly not deterred immigrants, meaning we should be creating laws to make it easier for immigrants to live here legally. Families should not be separated because of immigration. Children can’t help their parents decision. We should be treating these children as people of the country rather than animals.
