Mayoral Debate by Madison S.

On Tuesday, October 23, 2018, KDYN and Mrs. Dawa's AP Government and Politics class hosted a mayoral debate for the city of Ozark. There were three candidates running for the position: Roxie Hall, Steve Whitaker, and the former mayor, T.R. McNut. Two of the three appeared at the debate.
Going into the debate, I learned toward Mrs. Hall. She is a familiar face. She has always been involved in my life for as long as I can remember. I believe she had a better chance of receiving the position because she has been in this town for a long time. As the debate progressed, I began to see the points Mr. Whiteaker was making. He was making reasonable and valid point. Everyone in town thought Mr. Whitaker was just a crazy man, but  if he was he was crazy with a purpose. He had an action plan for Ozark, and he was ready to take it. He seemed to be more prepared than Mrs. Hall. Throughout the debate. Mr. Whiteaker answered questions better than Mrs. Hall.

After the votes were counted two weeks ago, it was determined that a runoff would pursue between Mrs. Hall and Mr. McNut. I believe the reason Mr. Whiteaker wasn't in the runoff because he just isn't well know and hasn't been that  involved with local politics until recently in Ozark. Mrs. Hall and Mr. McNut have been involved in local politics for many years. In my opinion, Mr. Whiteaker won the debate, and I think he could have done some good for this town.

  1. I agree that Mr. Whiteaker won the debate and could do good for this town; however, some o fhis ideas were unrealistic. I also agree that he was more prepared than anyone else. I think that Mr. McNutt is in the runoff only because he has been the former mayor, but i dont think he would be the right person to be our mayor again.

  2. This is a very interesting perspective; it definitely gives insight as to why Roxie Hall was the most popular candidate on the ballot. Your personal connection to Roxie Hall is shared by most of Ozark. It is pretty common knowledge that politicians are corrupt so it must be very comforting to have someone you personally know and know to be extremely involved in the community running for office. I think this advantage is what will win the election for Mrs. Hall. That being said, I agree that Steve Whitaker had the potential to uplift Ozark and won the debate with his unique ideas and passion for change. This was a very interesting race because each candidate was very distinct and had their own advantages.

  3. I also agree that Steve Whiteaker won the debate. He seemed to stand more firm on his ideas and outlined a definite plan for the city of Ozark. However, some of his ideas seemed unrealistic and he contradicted himself at times. Though McNutt did not attend the debate, he did have advantage of being the current sitting mayor. In hindsight of the election, I think T.R. McNutt will be replaced by Roxie Hall. It seems that many people want a change in power.
