In our country’s 238 year history, the popular vote has only lost five times. In my personal opinion the Electoral College is good, it gives the smaller states a chance to get their voices heard. The Electoral College keeps the larger populated states from determining who wins the presidency. Hawaiian Democrat, Senator Brian Schatz, said in a statement, "In an election, the person who gets the most votes should win. It's that simple.” He is one of the proposers of this amendment. Senator Schatz has the support of some of his fellow Democrat Senators.
Do you think that the Electoral College henders or benefits our democracy? Do you think this proposed amendment will pass? Is the Electoral College outdated in your opinion? Do you think that in our lifetime we will see the Electoral College die?
I don't think that there is a reason good enough to get rid of the Electoral College. I believe that this amendment will not pass, due to the amount of people that would have to support it. I think that eventually getting rid of the Electoral College will be a bigger topic and have more support for it, but as far as getting rid of it, i'm not confident it will die before I do.
ReplyDeleteI think the Electoral College is beneficial. The founders made it this way for a reason. I don’t think the amendment will pass, but anything can happen. I can’t say for sure if the Electoral College will die before I do or not.
ReplyDeleteWhile I think the Electoral College has both benefits and disadvantages, I personally would rather have a popular voting system. The Electoral College is very flawed. It does in some ways hinder our democracy; people's votes are not inherently equal. I would like to see a new system of voting created- something that more equally lifts up small states while not diminishing large states' power. I can say with nearly absolute certainty that this amendment will not pass. It is very possible that the Electoral College will no longer be used in my lifetime with many new, young politicians with inventive solutions and a passion for change.
ReplyDeleteNo form of voting will be absolutely perfect in our government, but the electoral college is our best bet for now. Allowing a popular vote would determine what our major cities like Chicago, New York, and Las Angeles rather than our entire nation.
