Rock n’ Play Disaster by Liberty C.

On Friday, April 12, 2019, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recalled nearly 5 million Rock 'n Plays. This Fisher-Price product has been an amazing product up to this point. It has even been recommended by pediatricians for certain infants who have “congestion or acid reflux.” (Washington Post) So where did this product go wrong?

Introduced ten years ago, this product is cloth-covered, vibrates, plays music, and positions the baby at an incline. This proved to be a “life-saver” to parents. However, reports started coming in saying that “10 babies, all older than 3 months, had died when they rolled over while unrestrained in the cradle.” (Washington Post) Then, recent reports revealed that at least 32 children, all under 3 months old, had died as a result of asphyxia.

The leader of the SIDS Task Force, Rachel Moon, issued a statement in response to the recall. “Infants should always sleep on their back, on a separate, flat and firm sleep surface without any bumpers or bedding.” The product was called “deadly” by the American Academy of Pediatrics.

According to the Washington Post, “Fisher-Price is offering full cash refunds for Rock ‘n Plays purchased in the past six months. Sleepers bought before that are eligible for a voucher toward a new Fisher-Price product. The company said it will take three to four months to process the recalls, and is asking parents to disassemble their Rock n’ Plays and send back the two hub pieces that hold the cradle together.”  Now parents everywhere are in shock and anger.

1) Will there be stricter restrictions placed on infant toys and products after this recall?
2) Will there be more recalls?
3) What other products and toys have been recalled due to infant safety?

  1. We should place more safety regulations on children's toys. Everything that seems safe is not always that safe. As more children get injured from certain products, there will be be more recalls.

  2. I think that there will be stricter restrictions placed specifically on devices used for infants to sleep in. As they are the most fragile, the tests going forward must be improved upon so no injuries occur. There have been many toys in the past that I have seen that have been recalled that other company's will re-make and improve upon after the original has been recalled. More recalls are definitely going to happen due new toys being created everyday.

  3. I think there need to be more restrictions. As more restrictions are placed on toys for small children, other companies will start doing the same thing.

  4. I think this is a situation where government oversight and action is completely and Constitutionally justified. Beyond regulating commerce, the government's main job is to protect the people. I am all for more regulations on businesses--especially big corporations--that make them take better care of their customers and/or the environment. Maybe these horrible accidents will force the companies to realize the fragility of life and how vigilantly it must be protected.
