New York Tackles Climate Change by Elizabeth B.

https://www.usnews.com/news/national-news/articles/2019-04-19/new-york-city-tackles-climate-change-will-it-inspire-others

This past Thursday The New York Council passed a historic bill to tackle climate change.  New Yorkers hope that the bill they have created will be used by other cities who wish to take similar actions.  The Climate Mobilization Act includes issues on climate change such as greenhouse gas emissions and the feasibility with replacing all oil and gas burning power plants with renewables and batteries.  It would also establish a loan program and change building codes to promote construction of wind turbines and solar panels.  While it is a great idea for the larger cities, there is a concern that the smaller and more rural areas may not have the resources for bills such as this one.  This would lead to the state or federal levels to help an area adapt to climate change.

As of right now there is no federal plan to address climate change.  With that, even though this is not a federal bill being passed it is still going to affect our nation.  Climate change is a big topic in the U.S. and this bill being passed could eventually lead to other cities and states following along and then lead to a federal plan being addressed.

What is your view on climate change? Do you think this bill will help? Do you think this bill will lead to a federal plan?

  1. I believe climate change is a very serious matter that needs to be noticed. I think that at this point, anything will help. It's better to have something small like this than nothing at all. I don't think we will have a federal plan with this presidency considering we have a president who believes climate change is made up, but hopefully in the future, possibly with a democratic presidency, plans of such will be created.

  2. Climate change is incredibly important and needs to be addressed globally. I hope that the rest of the world should follow in this example and will continue to make progress. I doubt that a federal plan will follow anytime soon, though I think it should.

  3. It seems obvious that one singular plan to tackle climate change would not work for the entire nation. For instance, a plan that works for the industrial city of New York would not apply to a rural, agricultural town such as Ozark. I think the government should work to create numerous plans that tackle the issue of pollution on a localized level. They should curate the plans to focus on the specific circumstances of each geographical area (underfunded rural areas as well as large booming cities). I think climate change is a significant issue. We, as a country, should do what must be done to reduce our emissions and pollution. These bills are a great start. People have to care enough to try to find solutions for a change to occur. I'm not very optimistic about Congress' ability to get a bill focused on reducing climate change passed.

  4. Climate change is a very real and concerning issue. With so little time left to save our planet, any plan to action is helpful. It is fairly clear that reusable water bottles and veganism are not as helpful as lowering gas emissions, but every little thing helps. However, climate change needs to become a more serious issue soon. Huge businesses are putting out huge amounts of pollution and individuals are expected to convert this alone, which is next to impossible. Without a proper bill trying to reduce emissions, there is no chance climate change with stop or revert. I think this specific bill could help with newer buildings, however the older ones will still be producing pollution at a rapid rate.

  5. Climate change is hyped up too much. We need to be take care of the planet God has provided for us to live on, but we can’t completely stop climate change. No one knows if these bills will help or not, but it’s different for rural areas than it is for big cities.
