Bernie Sanders Leads Democrats in Early 2020 Rankings by Peyton O.

https://www.cnn.com/2019/04/24/politics/2020-rankings-bernie-sanders-joe-biden-donald-trump-kamala-harris/index.html
Senator Bernie Sanders emerged earlier today as the leader of the 2020 Presidential Election power rankings for the democrats.Sanders ran in the 2016 Presidential election but lost the democratic nomination to Hillary Clinton. Sanders announced a couple weeks ago of his intent to run again in the upcoming 2020 election. Bernie now leads the CNN rankings as most likely to win the democratic nomination. He is currently ahead of other large democrat candidates such as Kamala Harris. Former Vice-President Joe Biden also announced his intent to run for President. However, feel the Bern remains at the head of the pack. Many experts believe that with so many democratic candidates already announcing their plans to run, the democrats will not stand a chance in the upcoming election, and will essentially be handing Trump his reelection. The democratic party will be weakened due to the wide distribution of votes across multiple candidates. So, unless one candidate steps into power and takes complete control over the democratic voters, the 2020 election could potentially be a washout. Until then, Bernie Sanders leads his 20 other democratic running mates in the power rankings.

  1. If he does win the nomination, do you think Bernie Sanders has a chance at beating Donald Trump?
  2. Do you think Bernie would be the best fit for the democratic nomination in 2020?
  3. How big of an effect do you think the Incumbency Advantage has on an election? Do democrats have an unfair chance at winning?

  1. If he does win I think he does not have a chance at beating Trump. I don't think he is the best fit because of the results of the last election against Clinton. I think the incumbency has a very big effect on the election. Unless something tragic happens that can be blamed on the President the democrats do not have a real chance.

  2. If Bernie does win, I feel like it would turn a lot of states blue considering he is technically independent. It would bring out not only democratic voters, but the independent voters who previously didn't vote. I am still trying to decide who I believe is best fit for the democratic side but Bernie will for sure be high on the list. At this point, the incumbency advantage doesn't exist because of how poor Trump's presidency has been. I believe with a new, younger generation of voters coming in again, democrats could have a chance.

  3. First of all, I hope that Bernie Sanders is given a fair chance this time. It seems as though in many ways Sanders has become a populist candidate on the Left rather than a corporate Democrat like Hillary Clinton; and yet, I doubt that even Sanders would be able to beat Trump in the election.

I think Bernie Sanders is a relatively good fit for the current Democratic Party, though I honestly think that Andrew Yang deserves at least as much recognition if not more because he's shown himself to be very capable of arguing his points instead of pushing rhetoric like the average politician, which is something I've never even seen Sanders do.

Though I think the incumbency advantage will play a huge role in the 2020 election, I also think that it would not be any more unfair than Obama's incumbency advantage in the 2012 election.

  4. I feel that there may be a small chance for him to win. I mean he is better than all of the other nut cases that are running for the Democratic nomination. I feel that since he is Bernie Sanders, its a memorable name, and im sure people will really vote for him just for that. I feel that since many people dislike Donald Trump, they Democrats may have a chance to win.

  5. I think Bernie Sanders has a decent chance of winning against Trump, but he is too radical for me. I feel that we need someone younger with more momentum and a fresh face. However, if Bernie chooses a thoughtful VP he might have a very fair chance of winning. The incumbency advantage will help Trump a lot because he has already created a stable base of supporters and has FOX news in the palm of his hand.

  6. I believe Bernie Sanders is too far left to get independent votes. He could try to cover up his "democratic socialism" ideas to get more votes, though. Bernie Sanders seems to be less fake than their last candidate, and he might've even been cheated out of a nomination last election. I think someone like Pete Buttigieg would have a better chance at winning the presidency. Right now it seems like whoever can victimize themselves the most can gain the most support. Trump doesn't have Fox News in the palm of his hand, though. Fox News has been right wing for years and years, and they are currently in the middle or to the right. Trump was angered when Bret Baier didn't correct Bernie Sanders in his town hall with Fox News.

  7. Bernie Sanders will not receive the Democratic nomination. Now that Joe Biden is in the race, Bernie has no chance. The Democrats have been betting on Biden to announce his candidacy for a long time. Now that he has announced it, it is certain he will receive the nomination. Even if Biden isn't as highly supported as another Democratic candidate, a few super delegates will ensure that he receives the nomination. In regards to the incumbency advantage, Donald Trump has just as much advantage as any president before him that ran for reelection. Historically, there have been very few presidents that did not have the incumbency advantage. Only those that were absolutely atrocious as president did not have the incumbency advantage because everyone despised them. Obviously many will say that Trump has done a terrible job as president and that he has few supporters and has no chance of being reelected, but then again he did win the 2016 election against a candidate whose odds of winning were 99 to 1.

  8. I think he's got a small chance of beating Trump if he makes it far in the race. For me, he's not the best Democratic candidate.

  9. I think if he wins the democratic nomination he will get a lot of votes but nothing of what President Trump would receive. This would also make two ideologies clash as Bernie leans more towards a socialist society and President Trump is clearly a capitalist. I do not believe he will get the nomination nor do I believe the Democratic Party stand a chance if they can't get a solid candidate in the next couple of months.
