Ever since Trump was elected president in 2016, the words collusion, conspiracy, and witch hunt have been thrown around various media outlets. This topic, the long-awaited Mueller report, has finally been finished. After more than two years of constant media coverage from democrat leaning networks such as CNN and MSNBC, Attorney General William Barr’s summary revealed that neither Donald Trump or his campaign team conspired or colluded with Russians. This is a huge win for the country, but some news anchors don’t appear to be too happy with the findings. The most likely reason for this is because the news tremendously hurts the networks’ credibilities and could crash ratings. After all, news companies mainly focus on how to make money and give what the people want, which is news with very large circumstances. Consequently, many of the anchors and their guests claimed that Donald Trump and his team made deals with the Russians, and Buzzfeed went as far as publishing an article claiming that President Trump was a Russian spy as if it was a fact. These examples of literal fake news have severely damaged the president’s public image, so Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani asked CNN host Chris Cuomo to apologize for lying and overreacting to the supposedly partisan investigation. However, Cuomo stood his ground and said “Not a chance… because you’re not fair.” This issue is important to the nation because it is a turning point in the Trump presidency in terms of public perception of him. This situation could lead to future legislation concerning fake news or future presidential investigations.
Do you believe this was a partisan investigation even though Mueller revealed there was no collusion? Do you believe anyone in the media should apologize to viewers or the president for their lies? Do you believe the media truly believed Trump was guilty, or just wanted to cause a stir and damage his reputation? Will this begin a process of presidents being investigated
The Mueller investigation was something that needed to happen whether you believed Trump was in the wrong or not. This way the investigation happened and people have their proof. Of course the media stirred the story to make it sound more juicy to the public.
ReplyDeleteI think it is of paramount importance that our government is held accountable for its action, and that anything suspicious is investigated. To me, that is part of keeping America safe and free from government tyranny and corruption, something written into every part of the Constitution as part of the foundation our very country and government. Beyond my beliefs about a limited government, I stand firm that "You shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free." (Which, of course, cannot happen if we do not allow investigations to thoroughly find and determine that truth.)
ReplyDeleteI do not think that this was a partisan investigation, though I do believe both parties have made it into somewhat of a kindergarten circus ring smashing each other in the press and playing the partisan blame game. Mueller was clearly nonpartisan and, I believe, reported all the truth that he could(n't) find.
Of course I could've missed something, but I have never heard a news network outright claim that he did indeed collude with Russia, though I'm sure there has been lots of eyebrow raising and maybe even suspicion that it happened. This being said, I do not think any news network needs to apologize. Their actions are protected by their First Amendment rights to free speech and freedom of the press.
I believe news the news outlets tried to "stir the pot" to get more views and more money. People don't want to watch boring news, they want something that interests them. Major media companies would rather twist the truth for money rather than tell facts and let the viewers create their own opinions.
ReplyDeleteNews companies obviously wanted to get more viewers but that being said, I don’t think they should apologize about it. Their job is to report the news, wether it is partisan or not. I think the investigation was valid because any suspicious activity should be investigated. This investigation proved that Trump was somehow elected by the people of the US. I’m glad there wasn’t any collusion with Russia and hope Mr. Putin keeps his little fingers out of our next election.
