Virginia delegate Patrick Hope has a plan to offer up articles of impeachment against Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax. Hope plans to file for the impeachment Monday morning. He believes that Fairfax’s actions cause for a removal. Fairfax was accused of sexually assaulting two women, including raping one of the women. After the accusations were made Fairfax released a statement acknowledging the women, but saying that both interactions were consensual.
Hope making this step would be the first part of the removal process. It will begin at the House and then with the majority vote it will move on to the Senate who will make the final decision. How the House and Senate plan to handle this situation will affect the nation in the future. In the nation today lots of women have been coming forward with their experiences with sexual assault. So how this plays out will determine how in the future the nation will handle high powered men being in situations like this.
Fairfax’s spokeswomen came out with this statement, “It is especially important in the most difficult of times that we pay attention to our fundamental Constitutional values.”
Do you think Fairfax should be impeached? Is this a growing problem in our nation today?
If these allegations are true, then he should be impeached. Sexual assault allegations are being seen a lot more with politicians. Victims of this horrible thing deserve justice.
ReplyDeleteI do believe that this is a growing problem in our nation today. If these women are telling the truth then the man should not be aloud to serve in public office and his case should be tried in court. Although with the large amounts of women coming forward making similar claims, there should be a penalty or punishment for lying and making false claims. False claims are what diminish the truth of real sexual assault victims and cause people to distrust real victims.
ReplyDeleteIf Fairfax is proven guilty of these accusations, he should absolutely be impeached. This is not the type of person that we need in a position of power. Having an alleged predator represent a state is shameful indeed. I do not necessarily believe this is a growing issue in the US. I think it's more accurate to say people feel more empowered to come forward with their stories than in the past. I do not like the thought of accusations being used as political warfare, but this may not be the case; it is really not outlandish for men in positions like his to abuse their power.
ReplyDeleteI don't know all of the facts in this situation, and the article seems to indicate that the media don't either, but I can say a few things for sure. I will treat Fairfax like I treated Brett Kavanaugh and others--I will wait until he is proven guilty before believing currently unsubstantiated allegations.
ReplyDeleteDon't get me wrong. I completely understand that if he's guilty, then there is more than enough reason for him to be impeached. The problem, however, is that I'm hearing the same thing I hear over and over again, which is that "X politician must be guilty because we said so. Don't question it, just believe us."
To be painfully honest, I'm tired of this problem in America where every politician that wins anything is defamed based on what may or may not be baseless accusations. I've already heard of many circumstances where women who have accused politicians before have apologized and admitted that their claims were false and that they knew it.
More than anything, though, I am tired of people who are willing to just assume that these accusations must be true; there is always a chance that they may be false, and the fact that false allegations have historically been rare doesn't mean we can safely assume these are real. As all the Republicans said before when Kavanaugh was being approved, I want to see due process here before anyone assumes anything. It's the whole reason we have the courts in the first place.
I don't know if it was mere damage control PR when Fairfax's spokeswomen said “It is especially important in the most difficult of times that we pay attention to our fundamental Constitutional values”, but I would still maintain the importance of that quote whether Fairfax is guilty or not.
If the sexual assault allegations are true he should be impeached. If they are false accusations, I hope that justice is served. There is a rising number of women who claim they have been sexually assaulted by men who never assaulted them. It is becoming an issue. Too many women have cried wolf and now it’s hard to determine who is telling the truth. There should be punishment for false accusations.
