This comes a decade after teachers advocated for the performance-based pay system that was supposed to encourage teachers to take on harder classes and teach with incentive. However well this was supposed to be for the teachers, it has turned into “a monster of unintended consequences,” according to Ms. Wilson, an English teacher who went on strike Monday. These teachers are working with a union to help raise awareness for the teachers in the area.
This issue has been on the table several times before in American politics. Teachers are our very basis of learning and spreading knowledge, yet in many cases, their salaries aren’t even enough to cover the basics of life. These teachers have taken to using their right to free speech to change the laws in their area.
What do you think should be done to improve the lives of teachers in Denver and across the United States? Do you think this is an effective way to change the system?
All teachers deserve fair pay. They work really hard at school and outside of school. By looking at some of the students teachers have to put up with, they deserve way more than what they get paid. Teacher walkouts are a great way for them to get their voices heard.
ReplyDeleteI think teachers do deserve to get better pay with the things they have to put up with. Without them no one would be educated and our nation would be a lot worse. I think these strikes/walkouts are a very effective way to get people to listen and help their cause.

ReplyDeleteI think that teachers should indeed have a higher salary. As for the performance based pay, i think that is silly and could easily have some issues. Teachers do play a crucial role in our economy sand i think that we should treat them as well as they do us.
ReplyDeleteI agree with everyone else saying teachers deserve higher pay. I think most Americans are in agreement with this statement regardless of party. I am unsure of how teachers' salaries are decided and at whose discretion, but I believe factoring better benefits and pay for teachers in to budgeting is a very good idea. Teachers play an essential role in the development of children. It's in everyone's best interests to have well-supported and well-funded figures heading classrooms. History has proven that protests like this are effective and a nonviolent way of bringing about change. The Constitution protects this right so that Americans can fight against unfair practices, and I believe this falls under that category.

ReplyDeleteTeachers definitely deserve to be paid more. They do so much that goes unnoticed. Without teachers, the future generations would not be educated. Teachers put up with a lot, so they should at least be paid fairly.
