CEO or President by Liberty C.

Howard Schultz, former Starbucks CEO, announced in a 60 Minutes interview Sunday that he was “seriously thinking” of running as an Independent candidate in the 2020 Presidential Election. Schultz has already begun to receive criticism from the Democrats over this announcement. Many believe that by running an Independent, he is handing President Trump the re-election. Others such as Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren have already made “pre-emptive strikes” against billionaires who will self-fund campaigns. This is possibly because of the threat of large companies or corporations influencing our elections. This is a serious threat that could shape public policy in favor of corporations instead of the American people.

Despite this, Schultz has already started the process of getting his name on the ballot in all 50 states. Schultz told CBS in an interview, "I want to see the American people win. I want to see America win. I don't care if you're a Democrat, Independent, Libertarian, Republican. Bring me your ideas. And I will be an independent person who will embrace those ideas..." In a New York Times interview, Schultz shared his plans for “criss-crossing the country” on his book tour before making the final decision.

1) Do you think that by running, Schultz will help or hurt President Trump’s re-election?
2) Do you think billionaires running in the election could really pose a problem or not?
3) Do you think a former CEO would have what it takes to run a country?

  1. I dont feel like it will be as large of a impact on his re-election. I feel like money would have a impact on the election if more continue to run. I feel like really being the CEO of a company might have what it takes to run a country.

  2. I think that by running as Independent, he isn’t a threat to trump at all. The country is more divided between democrat and republican than ever and in order to win an election, sadly to you have run for either democrat or republican.

  3. I could see sides for hurting Trump's re-election, but not for helping him. I predict that he will either pull some of the Trump Supporter's vote from him, or he will gain a small fraction of the votes, like most independents do. I think billionaires running in elections are a good idea. They are more likely to fund their own campaigns and won't be politically influenced by contributions made to their campaign. I think being a CEO would not have an effect on his ability to lead a country unless it was a negative effect because he has no political background.

  4. I don’t think him running will have much of an effect on Trump. He could possibly have what it takes to be President.
