As with previous controversies regarding US immigration policies, this conflict has polarized both sides. While some more liberal commentators have referred to the border patrol agents’ use of tear gas as a “chemical attack,” some more conservative speakers considered it justified and compared it to a similar incident under the Obama administration in which border patrol agents used pepper spray to deter migrants in 2013.
There is a clear divide in what people think is happening at the border. It is of utmost importance that we all understand and agree on what is actually going on. Are these particular migrants economic migrants or desperate refugees? Are they seeking asylum, or are they storming the border? How big of a problem is this situation? And how do we know the answers to those questions?
Whatever is happening, the way people understand events like this could influence how we see border security and immigration policy in the future. Events like this may affect what our border patrol agents will do hereafter as well, including whether using tear gas in a situation like this will be considered justified or not.
It seems like Americans can't agree on anything anymore. I believe we should not let migrants rush into the country illegally. Why can't people agree that we should stop illegal immigration? The migrants need to be vetted and go through a process to become U.S. citizens and legally immigrate into the country. It is dangerous to allow anyone who wants in the country to come in because we wouldn't know their background and they could possibly commit more serious crimes.
ReplyDeleteMigrants should no be aloud to enter our country illegally. We should do whatever it takes to protect our country and our boarders. These migrants should go through the process of immigration legally and then be aloud to enter the country. I believe that the use of tear gas is justified in this situation considering the masses of people who are attempting to enter the country.
ReplyDeleteIf migrants want to enter our country that is okay, but they should do it the right way. If the government feels they need to take the precaution with the tear gas they have a right to do that.
ReplyDeleteTo me it seems like they want to storm the border, not seek asylum. This situation is a pretty big problem. It will be interesting to see how this plays out. Now all that we have left to do is sit back with a bowl of popcorn and see how this plays out!
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, they are just trying to cause trouble. They aren't refugees who are seeking asylum. This is definitely a problem that needs to be solved soon. The United States has tolerated illegal immigration long enough. If people want to come here legally, I am okay with that. However, no one has any right or excuse to enter our country without proper procedure.
ReplyDeleteThere is justification to the use of tear gas on the migrant caravan attempting to force its way into the country. The key factor missing from this situation is permission. The migrant caravan has not gained any permission to enter our country whatsoever. They are attempting to force their way through our national borders and illegally enter our country. It is understandable that many of these immigrants might be seeking better lives in America, but this is not the correct course of action. Our nation has the right to deter these invading migrants with necessary actions. Our country has absolutely no information on the identities of these people or their exact whereabouts. You wouldn't allow a complete and utter stranger, who has already attempted to enter forcefully, into your home? This is the exact reason our nation has an immigration system in place. If these people want access to our nation or wish to live in the United States then they should apply for citizenship just like all other law abiding people. Storming a country's border isn't the proper way to gain entry. Additionally, their attempts to force their way into the country does not give them the a good look either. If anything, they are personally ruining their own chances of coming into this country by charging the border and engaging Border Patrol agents.
ReplyDeleteI assure you, if these people could get approved to enter the country legally, they would have already done it. However, the naturalization process takes years to complete. The people in the caravan did not have years where they came from, nor do they have years waiting at the border. Most of these people do not even speak English, and don't know how to apply for legal immigration. How about instead of shaming and criminalizing these vulnerable migrants, we HELP them? We HELP them to learn English, we HELP them to apply for a green card, we HELP them survive in something other than a flooded campsite at the edge of the border. Chemical weapons are meant for wars, not migrants.
