The Mexican Border has remained a place of unrest throughout the past couple of days as the migrants on “the caravan” have arrived at the border. The migrants began their journey to the border early last month when 7,000 Central Americans fled the country of Honduras seeking asylum in the United States. However, the Trump Administration has explicitly stated that the migrants will be denied asylum in the U.S.. When the caravan arrived at the border, they were met with a blockade consisting of the Mexican Police and U.S. Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) agents. Many of the migrants rushed the border, attempting to force their way into the United States. The CBP used tear gas to push the migrants back and deny their entry. Although the use of tear gas has been highly criticized by American citizens, President Trump stated that the use of tear gas was both necessary and safe. He also made the claim that some border patrol agents were severely harmed by stones thrown by the migrants. However, CBP leaders have stated that only 4 agents were hit with rocks, and their armor protected them from harm. Trump threatened to close the U.S.-Mexican border in a tweet on Monday. Although this is possible, it seems pointless to many as the U.S. economy would suffer as the billions of dollars coming into the U.S. from Mexico every month would be cut off.
What is your opinion on the use of tear gas?
Do you think we should give the migrants asylum in the U.S.?
Should the border be closed until the migrants disperse?
I personally do not have a problem with the tear gas. It is all about what gets the job done. It's not like we were spraying them with sulfuric acid. We should not give the migrants asylum in the United States. If they want to come into our country, the are more than welcome to... Welcome to come in LEGALLY! We should close the border temporarily until this is all over. I do not have a problem with immigration, that is what our country was built around. However, I do have a problem with illegal immigration.
ReplyDeleteI feel like tear gas was the best way to fight back without killing the migrants. Giving the migrants asylum in the U.S. would not be a good idea, they should go through the process man others do every day to become a citizen. I am not sure of how much impact closing the border would have on the United State's economy, but I think it would be an effective way to stop the migrants from crossing the border.
ReplyDeleteGas them all! Call me heartless but, President Trump specifically told them that they would not be granted asylum. Like Gunner said, its not like we are using poison gas. We are simply helping them form getting arrested or even shot. I agree with Trump, we should not give them asylum. I feel like if we shut down the boarder it could cause a large cargo hold between the United States, and Mexico. I feel like we need to keep it open, but put into place a immigrant ban until this whole thing blows over.
ReplyDeleteI think that tear gas was a little excessive but probably justified. While some of these migrants probably deserve asylum, President Trump did say that he would not grant it to them and that's the order we should follow. I don't think we should close the border because it would cost us money and there's no way to know how long this will take to blow over.

DeleteI don't believe in using chemical weapons on children, personally. But yes, I do agree that our country was built on ILLEGAL immigration. (To be fair though, our ancestors murdered and enslaved the people who got in our way, which doesn't seem like the best argument to me.) I think that instead of sending thousands of soldiers, spending billions of dollars on a fence- sorry, "wall"- to keep people out, or possibly closing the border, our government should be sending judges, lawyers, and teachers to help these people enter our country legally.
ReplyDeleteI do not agree with the use of tear gas used on these people, especially the children. These families only want to better their lives and get the asylum they so desperately want and need. Traveling thousands of miles to ‘invade’ a country that isn’t ours to begin with is terrifying and incredibly brave. These people dreamed of a life where they did not have to worry about being killed every second, and what does that country give in return? Even more pain and misery. I do not think closing the border would be a good idea as it is very expensive and instead the government should offer more affordable ways to gain asylum into our country.
