Ozark Mayoral Debate by Marissa J.

On October 23, 2018, Ozark held its first Mayoral Debate since quite a while ago. This event took place at 6:30 in the newly built Ozark Performing Arts Center. Having mostly been used for school plays and assemblies, it now was the home of a debate between two determined candidates trying to prove themselves to Ozark’s community. Ozark’s High School AP Government and Politics class along with KDYN made this event possible. Our hardworking crews assisted the candidates as well as controlled the necessities such as sound, light, and the displays. Of the three running candidates, only two candidates were present that night. T.R McNutt was unable to attend the event due to personal health issues. However, Roxy Hall and Steve Whitaker were present and making their stands. Steve had clear and thorough plans for what he wanted and how he planned to achieve it. However, Roxy had one slight advantage. Roxy is highly familiar with the community and its issues while Steve is newly involved. At the debate, many favored Steve in the end though because he was able to give clear opinions and precise ideas. I believe that Steve was the winner of the debate. This event was an outstanding opportunity for many Ozark citizens to get more knowledge of their candidates as well as our High School class to learn new skills and gain political awareness.

Why do you think that the polls changed?
Is there a way that we could’ve got more of Ozark’s citizens to attend?
Should our questions have been broader or more specific?
Do you think T.R being absent hurt his chances of winning?

  1. I thought our questions were well-written and were both broad and specific. I don't think T.R.'s absence affected his chances of winning. I am not surprised that there is going to be a runoff between McNutt and Hall because most of McNutt's supporters weren't at the debate and the other two candidates were split evenly among voters according to the polls.

  2. I think that the polls changed because people though that Steve had better points than Roxie.
Is the way that we could’ve got more of Ozark’s citizens to attend is by adverting the debate longer. I feel like our questions were fine. I feel like T.R being absent did not hurt his chances of winning. He is currently in the run off with Roxie.

  3. I think if we would have started advertising earlier than we did, more people would have attended the debate. Considering T.R. had as many votes as he did on election day, I don't think him not attending the debate hurt him too badly. He still has a lot of supporters.
