Mississippi Runoff by Bethany F.


Nearing the end of the election season, one last senate race is preparing for a runoff on November 27th. In Mississippi, Republican incumbent Cindy Hyde-Smith faces Democratic candidate Mike Espy. Espy is hoping to return some Democratic control to the state especially following the controversies surrounding Hyde-Smith. Ms. Hyde-Smith has stated that if a supporter were to invite her to public hanging “she’d be front row”. In a state with a history of racial lynching, this comment was considered by many to be extremely inappropriate. She has also been quoted saying that there were some liberals that they “maybe didn’t want to vote”. These comments have given Espy, a black man, extra motivation for his campaign.

The decision of this election would be impactful in American politics. With the current Senate standings, Republicans hold 52 seats while Democrats hold only 47 seats. While this election cannot level the playing field for Senate Democrats it could help close the gap and aid Democrats in next year’s election. This election will impact how efficiently decisions are made in the Senate. In the Appointments Clause of the Constitution, it is outlined that the Senate must approve federal judges. This election’s results along with the other Senate elections of this year have maintained Trump’s power to elect conservative Supreme Court Justices by holding a Republican majority.

    I feel that Hyde-Smiths comments were not appropriate given the situation. She should have honestly thought about what she was gonna say before she said it. Its understandable if you feel a certain way about something, but it is not wise to make such a controversial statement while running for office. I am surprised to see that she won given her controversial statement and that it did not drastically affect the outcome of the election. I do not foresee this election having much effect on future politics since it wont make much of a difference either way. The majority would still remain the same, so its not likely that it would cause any drastic changes.

    Hyde-Smith's comments were controversial, but they clearly didn't hurt her too much because she came out with a win. I feel as though future politicians should really watch what they say because their words can quickly change the minds of their supporters.

    I think her comments were unprofessional. I wasn't too surprised to see her win because she was the incumbent. I agree with Gavin in think that the election won't make that much if a difference. It can't change the majority or do that much to close the gap. -Liberty Cooley
