2018 Ozark Mayoral Debate by Ethan D.

Ozark Mayoral Candidates, Roxie Hall and Steve Whiteaker, recently participated in a mayoral debate at the Ozark High School Performing Arts Center on Tuesday, October 23. It was held by Ozark’s Ap Government and Politics class, and local radio station, KDYN/KLYR. Current mayor and candidate T.R. McNutt, chose not to attend the debate due to scheduling issues. Mr. Whiteaker plans on bringing tourists and visitors from interstate into Ozark to increase business and activities. He also plans on creating entrepreneurship opportunities in hope of getting businesses to be in Ozark, as well as, allow the citizens of Ozark to have a chance of making their ideas known and work. Whiteaker provided a lot of ideas and initiatives allowing him to catch the eyes of the audience and win the debate. Roxie Hall also performed well, telling that she wanted the ideas from the people and what is best for the city. However, the lack of current ideas and plans for the city showed a weakness, which led to less votes for her throughout the exit polls.

  1. Who do you believe won the debate and why?
  2. In your opinion what was the impact of Mr. McNutt not being present at the debate?
  3. Who do you think will win the mayoral position, and what ideas or plans put them above the other candidates.

  1. Both Mrs. Hall and Mr. Whiteaker had very strong and valid arguments. I like Mr. Whiteaker's idea of getting more business in Ozark. I also appreciate Mrs. Hall's stance on listening to what the people want. I believe that it did hurt Mr. McNutt by not being present in the debate. It makes people wonder if he has something to hide and didn't want to be questioned about anything.

  2. I believe that Steve Whiteaker won the debate. He had strong ideas and a clear vision for what he wanted to do in office. Mr. McNutt obviously had the advantage going into the election but, because he was absent from the debate I believe that he made the race much closer. He is absence split the vote.

  3. I think that Steve Whitaker won the debate because his ideas are what I personally believe will help Ozark prosper economically. From the results of the election, McNutt's decision did not hinder him that significantly. I'm assuming that our poll results were caused by a lack of attendance of his supporters at our event. I think Roxie Hall will win the mayoral race because she has a composed and professional demeanor along with a good reputation.

  4. I think that Whitaker won the debate. However, i feel as though there were times that he contradicted himself, such as, whenever he said that the community center wasn't making enough and then proceeded to say that we should cut fees for the walking and basketball portions. Even though he says this i still believe he won.

I think Mr. McNutt not attending the debate made the race much closer than before. I also think Roxie Hall will win the election because of her reputation in the town.

  6. I think that Steve Whiteaker won the debate because his arguments were very well organized. I think that Mr. McNutt lost some support by not being at the debate. I think that Steve has very good ideas and it might give him a leg up in the election.

  7. I believe that Mr. Whiteaker won the debate. He presented his ideas in a clear and structural manner so every one could understand, and provided data and facts to support his ideas. I think that Mr. McNutt lost a lot of his supporters by choosing to not participate in the debate. It showed that he really didn't care enough or have any idea what he would say during the debate. I cannot say for sure who will win the debate but I think that Mr. Whiteaker has a strong amount of support in Ozark.
