2018 Elections by Logan W.

The voting on November 6 will determine how our country will pass laws for the next two years. The House of Representatives is predominantly Republican with 54.9% as well as the Senate with 51% . This allowed President Trump to pass laws through The House and Senate much easier. If the Democrats can win back the The House and Senate President Trump will lose a lot of his power he once had. Many of the laws President Trump has passed and wants to pass will be struck down by a predominantly Democrat House and Senate.

As of 6:00 a.m. on November 7 the Democratic party has won the House, but the Republican party has won the Senate. The election was closer between the two parties in Congress with the Republicans winning the Senate 53% and the Democrats winning the House 53%. President Trump will have a harder time passing his agenda with a more Democrat House.

1.How will having two conflicting parties in two seperate parts of Congress affect the outcome of new laws?
2. Did you support the new predominantly Democrat House of were you against it?
3. Will this new change in power help or hurt the United States?

  1. Having conflicting houses in Congress will likely make it much harder for any legislation to pass. Normally, I would consider this a good thing due to the fact that our government is based on gridlock; however, in this case, I'm not sure if that gridlock will do anything but slow the government down because members of Congress have lately decided things almost exclusively by party lines; Republicans have to agree with Trump, and Democrats have to resist him. Gridlock in our country could hypothetically be helpful in refining our government's decisions, but that would only be the case if members of Congress were to vote based on genuine convictions instead of their party's doctrines. I'm not sure if this change of power will hurt the US, but I can't really see it actually helping.

  2. Having both parties on congress will be beneficial for all of us. We will all be equally represented. Hopefully we can pass legislation by embracing bipartisanship.

  3. Even though its normally a good thing that we are equally represented i feel like nothing will get passed easily. I don't feel like it's a bad thing but i do feel as though we will be at a major standstill.

  4. The two conflicting parties in Congress is nothing new. There have always been two conflicting parties in Congress, the midterm elections just shift the representation of each. Usually the party that holds the majority will have more influence over lawmaking and the passing of certain laws. It is too early to determine how the nation will be affected by the shift in representation in both the Senate and the House. Considering that Republicans only hold the majority in the Senate by a small margin and the Democrats hold the majority in the House by a small margin, I do not think that there will be drastic changes to lawmaking. Given that the Republicans already held the majority in the Senate, the switch of control in the House to the Democrats will probably be nulled.
