AP Government Class Teams with Radio Station to Host Mayoral Debate by Peyton O.
A local Mayoral Debate was held in the small town of Ozark on Tuesday, October the 23rd. Ozark High School’s AP U.S. Government and Politics class, led by Mrs. Tracy Dawa, teamed up with KDYN Radio to host the debate. Ozark currently has three candidates running for mayor, Roxie Hall, Steve Whiteaker, and TR McNutt. However, Mr. McNutt did not participate in the debate because of an already scheduled eye surgery. There was a total of 18 questions asked during the debate. Both candidates were given the opportunity to speak for every question. Both candidates performed well, but one prevailed over the other. Steve Whiteaker provided a lot of accurate information and facts and used that information to show how he would help Ozark if elected Mayor. Mrs. Hall just generally agreed to what Mr. Whiteaker was saying. Mrs. Hall rarely supplied her own plans or ideas for the town, rather relying on her friends and family to vote her in. Steve said that he planned on spending the millions of dollars in reserves so Ozark can apply for more federal funding. I think that this idea will help Ozark overall because it gives us more money to spend in the long run. Most people in attendance agreed that Mr. Whiteaker won the debate.

I also agree with Peyton on who won the debate. I believe that both candidates are both more qualified for the position than T.R McNutt. I believe that my option and Steve Whiteaker are similar, we both agree that our local government is corrupt and need have a change. This was a fantastic project!
ReplyDeleteI agree with Peyton and Daniel. I think Roxie should have taken stronger stances and made her goals public instead of vowing to do whatever the public wants. Due to a lack of knowledge about Roxie's objectives, many people may be swayed to vote for Steve instead.
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, my good sir, according to the entrance/exit polls recorded by our class, most people in attendance DID NOT agree that Mr. Whiteaker won the debate; the majority of attendees who participated in the polls thought that Mrs. Hall won, and furthermore responded that they would vote for her. :)
ReplyDeleteI do agree, however, that Mr. Whitetaker had lots of good points about his specific plans/ideas for Ozark, but I think it is wholly false to say that Mrs. Hall did not also. For me, he "won" the first part - her points were a bit vague/more "stiff" sounding, whereas his were more
"authentic". She definitely won the second half, as he made the politics personal with several little nasty one-liners like "she's been in there for 20 years and hasn't done anything" and "we're never gonna get anything done in Ozark if we don't get some new ideas in office".
Grace, the people who took the exit polls did agree that Steve Whiteaker won the debate. In fact, six people said that Mr. Whiteaker won the debate but they are still voting for Roxie. This supports Peyton's point. Also, ten of Hall/Mcnutt supporters said they were now voting for Steve. I do not know where you found your information, but Peyton is correct. I also disagree when you say that Mrs. Hall won the second half of the debate. She was the one who made it personal in the first place. She said that he was attacking Ozark and that he called her an idiot. "I am not the brightest crayon in the box, but I will not be called an idiot." After that Mr. Whiteaker said that she had called him something bad. Then Mrs. Hall said that she apologized and he said he accepted the apology but she will regret it. She tried to make her the victim which didn't help at all. When he said she will regret it, he meant that as she will not be elected mayor because he will run.
