11 families grieve for their loved ones after the Tree of Life Congregation mass shooting in Pittsburgh. The incident occured on Saturday, October 27. The assailant, who was later identified as Robert Bowers, opened fire in the synagogue, destroying the peaceful and celebratory morning. A bris was underway, which is a ceremony to mark a child’s birth. Thankfully, no children were among the casualties; however, 11 congregants were killed and 4 police officers were injured. Authorities are now calling this a hate crime. Bowers has been charged with 29 Federal charges, including obstructing the free exercise of religious beliefs. He also faces at least 30 state charges, including 13 counts of ethnic intimidation.

Hate crimes have become a more common thing in our society. It is affecting the way our citizens interact as well as how our minority population is treated. Critics of President Trump say that he is to blame for the surge of hate crimes. They claim that his Twitter comments and rallies have stirred the “nationalism pot,” but President Trump has denied these claims.

1. What is your opinion of the rise of hate crimes?
2. How should we combat them?
3. Do you think President Trump is partially to blame for the rise of these crimes?

  1. These hate crimes are awful, and they don't make any sense to why people do this. The only thing we can do is have more security in places that are likely to be a place of target for hate crime. I don't think anyone besides the shooter is to blame, Trump didn't tell him, or anybody else, to go shoot people of a certain religion or race

  2. I think the rise in hate crimes is disgusting. People should find a way to release their anger in a way where no one is harmed, or ignore beliefs that they do not agree with. These crimes could be combated by creating new laws where firearms are not so easily accessible. However, I do not think Trump is responsible for the rise of these crimes.

  3. The rise of hate crimes is becoming something that seems almost impossible to stop. Everyday we hear about crimes against people of different religion, ethnicity, sexuality, gender, etc. I believe we should fight the crimes by making it harder for people to get ahold of firearms. While I don’t think trump is the reason for the hate crimes, I do believe he could be doing more to stop them from happening.

  4. While hate crimes might be increasing, it is not at a substantial rate. Hate crimes have happened since the beginning of time. I don't think that there is a way to completely stop hate crimes, but I do think that there is ways to stop the severity of them. I also do not think that President Trump talking about nationalism has anything to do with a hate crime. Nationalism deals with being prideful of one's country. This usually results in citizens being resentful towards other countries, not the people in their own. So, I don't see whereas nationalism fits into the puzzle here.

  5. Hate crimes are not okay. It disgusts me that people feel the need to commit such heinous crimes, or any crime at all. However, there is evil in the world and people are able to make their own choices, regardless of whether they are right or wrong. There is no way to put a complete stop to hate crimes. People will just have to try to make an effort to be decent. Also, there is no need to point fingers at Trump because he is not responsible for other people's actions.

  6. Hate crimes are awful and I don't know anyone who thinks that they are okay. There are a lot of crazy, evil people in this world. The best way to stop a mass shooting like this from happening is to be armed. If someone in the congregation had a gun they could have ended the shooting sooner and less people would have been killed. It is impossible to keep crazy people from getting or making weapons. If they are crazy enough to kill people, then they are crazy enough to break another law to be able to achieve that.
