Donald Trump and his three oldest children have sued two different banks to keep them from handing over information to the House of Representatives. The House had issued a subpoena for Trump’s financial records, and the banks refused to hand over the documents. The family has joined their lawsuits together against Capital One and Deutsche Bank to prevent them from handing over their financial records to the Democratic House, saying the subpoenas "have no legitimate or lawful purpose" in the filing.

Both the banks have a long history with Trump’s team and his businesses. This subpoena is asking for virtually all of Trump’s financial records for years.

These subpoenas were ordered by The House Intelligence and Financial Services Committees to look "into allegations of potential foreign influence on the US political process". Trump and his team are fighting against this subpoena in saying that the investigation is “meritless” and holds no substance.

Trump’s lawsuit against these subpoenaed banks is successfully stalling the House of Representatives on their motives to find out about Trump’s financial history. This could stall Congress from much more than that, however. If they are so focused on this one problem, are they really paying attention to much else going on that their constituents need?

Is it right for the House to issue subpoenas for Trump’s financial information? Are there more important things Congress could be doing? What are the grounds that financial subpoenas should be legal in the political process?

  1. I feel that it is unfair for the house to subpoenas Trumps financial info. They should be! Let they worry about other things other than trumps money. They should do it before hand rather than later while they have nothing better to do.

  2. I feel like it is unnecessary that the House subpoenas Trump's financial records. They have other things to deal with in the United States rather than finding dirt on Trump.

  3. I think the House can issue the subpoenas, but they should also realize that they are't going to get the financial records, so it makes the subpoenas useless. There are always more important things that Congress can do besides look at financial records, but it seems that little things are made into the biggest of deals. I don't see subpoenas as being very effective at any stage in politics, especially if they are towards to the president who can do a multitude of things to get away from them.

  4. They should not be wasting their time on this kind of stuff. We have homeless veterans living on the streets, and the House is more worried about his financial records. I do not think that the release of personal financial records is necessary.

  5. I think they should have the right to call subpoenas. I don't know if they should be able to access their financial records. Financial records should be private unless there is a public safety exception.

  6. Usually, it is rare for me to make statements like the ones I'm about to make, but this situation makes doing so necessary in my eyes. It is abundantly clear by now that the Representatives trying to get Trump's financial records are only doing so for the express purpose of finding new information to twist into anti-Trump propaganda. It is clear because they are constantly making advertisements spewing unsubstantiated accusations about Trump as if any of them are actually true, and their speeches are just the same. I've heard of political attacks before, but this is simply outrageous.

Anyone who has been getting news from more than just one side of politics knows that there is no evidence that supports the accusations being used by the Democratic leaders as justification for their continued investigations. An entire investigation was started because of an unverified news article from a clearly biased non-credible source, and now that even the FBI has said that they could not find evidence Trump was guilty, they are continuing investigations on their own, perhaps because they think it is the only way they can do anything to thwart whatever Trump does.

Is Trump guilty of anything that can be verified by his financial records? I don't know. But the only explanation I can see for investigating everything about a political opponent off of zero evidence is a pure political attack--I would say the same if Trump or anyone else was doing it. I personally have plenty of criticism for Trump, but I think it is quite clear by now that this is a complete sham, and anyone who has done impartial research of their own should come to just the same conclusion, no matter what they think about Trump.

  7. Clearly, there are better things the House should be doing. This is a waste of time. It’s really ridiculous how all these people want to do is try to find something else that’s bad to say about Trump. But I do think the House can issue subpoenas.

  8. I believe that the House has more important things they could be doing. Politics has become so corrupt today and Democrats are just trying to find something else to accuse President Trump of doing. Our government needs to come together and solve actual problems affecting our nation today and not try to split it. George Washington was right when he said that political parties would destroy the fragile unity holding the nation together.

  9. While I agree that there are other things that Congress should be able to / focus on, the credibility and legal status of our President is certainly one of them. In every way, the Constitution sets up the President to be held to an unwavering standard of adhering to the rule of law. "Democrats", as well as Republicans and all other concerned citizens, should continue to hold those in power to such a standard. I think Trump's financial information should be available to the full extent of the law.

  10. Perhaps it seems unnecessary but Congress has a right to ask for such information. I think Trump should practice transparency if he wants people to believe his innocence. Congress is a large body; they should be able to multitask and look into many different issues at once. If it can clear suspicion, I think there is grounds to look into his financial records.
