Trump Threatens Border Shutdown as Immigrant Flow Becomes Uncontrollable by Dougie D.

President Trump tweeted Friday about possibly shutting down the Mexican border. The threat comes from his urge for Mexico to crack down on illegal border crossings as ICE has become flooded with immigrants over the past couple of weeks. Shutting down the border won’t only affect Mexico. It will also affect the US.

90% of avocados in the US come from Mexico. By shutting down the border, it is predicted that the US will run out of avocados within three weeks. Most of the US’ strawberries, tomatoes, and bell peppers are also imported from Mexico. Alcohol would also be affected. The US sells $4.6 billion dollars worth of Mexican imported alcoholic beverages a year. It is also predicted that the entire US auto industry would shutdown within a week if the president closes the border because every US auto plant relies on Mexican-made parts.

The close would also affect the US’ exports. 69% of Mexico’s imports are from the US which makes up 15.7% of the US’ total exports, making them a large asset for our countries economy.

Despite being warned of the consequences of a border shutdown, Trump is still weighing the decision. This threat could also make it harder for Trump’ revised NAFTA agreement to be ratified. Threatening to shut down the border wall could make trump look even worse to Mexican lawmakers, making them decide not to sign the agreement.

Do you think shutting down the border wall would be beneficial for the US or only costly and painful? Do you think Trump means the threat or do you believe it is just a bluff?

  1. I could honestly see trump shutting down the border wall however, i doubt it would be for very long. It makes me sad though because I really like avocados. I think that if we shut the border down it will make the Mexican lawmakers hesitant to start back up good trades.

  2. I don't think that shutting down the border is beneficial to the U.S. I think that President Trump wants to shut down the border, but i don't think it will happen. I feel that he is partly listening to his advisers about the drawbacks and costs of shutting down the border.

  3. I figure (or at least hope) that President Trump's plan goes as follows: Threaten Mexico because they haven't been doing much to solve this problem lately (to my knowledge, at least), but don't completely shut down everything between Mexico and the US.

Everyone should be able to tell that shutting down all trade will be a net negative for both countries, even though Mexico may actually do something before Trump has to make a decision because any threat from the US is probably worth treating as serious.

If anything, the best plan of action would probably be to shut down the border temporarily for anything not related to trade but allow trade to continue unhindered. Even still, I'm not sure how much shutting down the border will help get things under control unless EVERYTHING that goes between the borders is stopped, including plane travel.

Do I think Trump's threat is serious? I won't pretend to know, but I hope he plans to do things somewhat along the lines of what I explained above if he does anything related to his threat.

  4. In my opinion, I think shutting the boarder down would not be benificail. I had no clue 15% of our imports are from Mexico. I think thats insane. I believe that President Trump will temporally close the boarder, but keep the trade open.

  5. Shutting down the border wouldn’t be beneficial at all. The economies of both the US and Mexico would be negatively impacted by this.

  6. I do not think shutting down the border is a very wise decision at all. Both countries rely on one another for different types of imports/exports, so cutting off the connection could cause some strife to find new ways to gather those items. I think Trump himself means his threats, however I feel as though if he can get his way, the shutdown will not last very long at all because he will realize the effects on both countries economies.
