Late last week President Trump threatened to close the U.S.-Mexico border unless Mexico did something about the illegal immigration occurring. His threat to Mexico has not been received well across the whole of Congress. His top economic advisors have even warned him of the effects of shutting down the border for even a day. According to Larry Kudlow, one of Trump’s economic advisors, the automobile industry could suffer tremendously due to the materials made in Mexico that U.S. plants require. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell was also very critical of President Trump’s threats, stating that the results would be “catastrophic.” However, despite the negative feedback, Trump has held strong, saying that he puts security before trading. In spite of his stubborn threats, Trump backed down early Tuesday afternoon from his threats of closing the border, stating that he was going to wait a few days before making a decision. In the past couple days there have been talks of allowing only commercial trucks to cross the border in order to account for the economic consequences; However, no official plan has been released.
- What is your opinion of Trump’s threats to shut down the Mexico border?
- Do you think the President should have the power to follow through on threats like these even if almost everyone in Congress, including his advisors, disagree with him?
- Do you think the President should have the power to commit actions that could potentially harm our economy?
I don't think it would be worth it to shut down the border. The president should have the power to do it in case he has to make a quick decision to protect the country. Briefing congress and waiting for their arguments would take too much time in some cases. The President already has a ton of power to either hurt or help our economy, and how he uses those powers determines his success.
ReplyDeleteI feel that shutting down the border wouldn't be worth the media hassle, and people complaining about how bad of a president is. I feel that he shouldn't even though he has the power. I mean they will have to learn the consequences that come with the problem.
