Today president trump vetoed this bill, which is only his second bill to veto. And the main issue for congress is that they do not have a two thirds vote to override him. He says
That this is, “an unnecessary, dangerous attempt to weaken my constitutional authorities, endangering the lives of American citizens and brave service members, both today and in the future.” President Trump’s only other veto was over the declaring of a national emergency to get funding for the southern border wall. Congress voted to block the national emergency and President Trump later vetoed it.
Do you think we should continue fighting in Yemen? Do you think President Trump made the right decision? Why do you think President Trump has only two vetoes right now while previous presidents had many more?
I still don't know all that much about what's going on in Yemen, but I doubt it's a war worth fighting. I can't understand Trump's decision here; the War Powers Resolution set by Congress doesn't obstruct his constitutional powers, and I fail to see any way that it would endanger American lives. If anything, it would likely save many lives if we were to withdraw, and I actually hope Congress manages to override the veto.
ReplyDeleteYou know, it's pretty odd that Trump would make such a decision; one of his campaign promises was to end the needless wars, and so far he's been doing that, improving relations with North Korea and withdrawing troops from Syria and Afghanistan. But why would he refuse to get forces out of Yemen, in a battle that seems to be pretty pointless? I can't help but get the idea that it has to do with Trump's relationship with Saudi Arabia; after all, I heard some time ago that he was really happy to be making more weapons deals with the Saudi government. If anything, I think we should reconsider why we're even allied with them in the first place. Couple this with our foreign policy with regard to Iran, and it's not hard to see why a president may be pushing for a proxy war.
The best criticism I can think of about Trump's reasoning here comes from, of all sources, Vox: "The Constitution, of course, gives war declaration powers to Congress, not the president."
The only reasoning I can see for Trump to veto this is to show the power of the US. I really don’t see any other point in it. I personally am against any kind of war and I think humanitarian aid would be safer and more helpful.
ReplyDeleteBecause I am obviously against Trump, I automatically think he signs bills just to please his people and try to get them on his side.
I don't think we should continue fighting in Yemen, it doesn't really seem to be a beneficial war. We don't seem to be fighting for anything. I think first trying to provide humanitarian aid would be better than providing troops to fight. I can't say if Trump made the right decision, I guess we will see in the future. I don't exactly know why Trump has less vetoes than other presidents, I think maybe there has been less controversial bills or actions during his presidency than in others.
