On Tuesday, President Trump took part in his second State of the Union address during his presidency. As usual, this came with much backlash and “fact checking” as many people want to point out his flaws. President Trump hit major points, such as, economic growth, border protection, and trade talks with other countries. He finished the address with a hopeful message to create bipartisanship, and stating that the best is yet to come. In addition, 76 percent of American viewers had said that they approved of this address, with 43 percent of all viewers being Republican. In another motion, Trump mentioned the increase of jobs, and that women had filled approximately 58 percent of these new jobs. After he had said this, the Democratic congresswomen in attendance, all dressed in white in remembrance of the 100th anniversary of the women's suffrage, began to stand up and cheer.

On the other hand, Trump was criticized for “mistakes” that were made during his speech. For example, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi criticizes Trump for not mentioning and ignoring the gun violence in America, as well as, for supposedly “assaulting” the LGBT community. In addition, Pelosi criticizes Trump for hurting the state of the American middle class and enriching the wealthiest 1 percent.

Did you approve of Trump’s speech, why or why not?
What should Trump have focused on more or less?
Do you believe Trump assaulted the LGBT community or was it a misunderstanding?

  1. I approved of Trump's speech. I think he made some good points and provided a lot of positive information about our year as a country. He didn't mention anything controversial such as the wall or Russia Investigation. He may have briefly said something, but did not stay on the topic. Instead, he talked about uniting our country and the two parties in Congress. I think he was pretty well rounded and didn't stay on one topic too long. I also don't believe that he assaulted the LGBT community and even if he did it was unintentional I'm sure.

  2. I generally approve of Trump's speech, though I am somewhat surprised that 76% percent of the viewers approved of it as well. I think he made a lot of great points, and I'm glad he focused on unity and compromise; I think it's fair to say that he's made his compromises (especially concerning the wall), and it's time for Congress to make theirs.

I don't think there's anything that he should have focused to a greater or lesser extent. And I watched the speech from beginning to end and don't remember hearing Trump say anything offensive to the LGBT community. I also don't understand what Pelosi's talking about when she accuses Trump of weakening the middle class. According to the CBS article, she referred to Trump as saying "two years of empty words." Unless she's just saying that in an attempt to discredit and attack him, I really don't understand where she's coming from on that.

  3. I thought Trump's speech was more of the same thing that he usually talks about. I was a little bit surprised to hear him celebrate the growth of women employment in the united states and the great strides they have made recently. I overall approved of his state of the union and thought it was well scripted, for once.
