Cuts to Abortion Funding by Bethany F.

The Trump administration is in the process of drafting changes to Title X, a $286 million program. These changes will prohibit funding to any establishment that promotes/provides/refers abortions to women. Critics cite that forcing doctors to withhold information from female patients violates medical ethics. Supporters of these changes say that abortions have no place in family planning institutions (what Title X directly regulates). Trump’s supporters who are largely pro-life appear to be pleased with this; however, the newly conservative leaning Supreme Court had denied attempts to defund Planned Parenthood just a month ago.

This gag rule of course most significantly affects Planned Parenthood. Many worry that this will negatively affect the reproductive care that lower income families are offered. Cutting funding to Planned Parenthood would make it difficult for them to provide their other services (STD prevention, cancer screenings, general patient care, etc.) that are not related to the termination of a pregnancy. Pennsylvania senator Bob Casey, a pro-life Democrat, has opposed this motion stating that it is “an attack on women’s health.” Although he is opposed to abortion, he sees the value in the other types of care that these clinics provide.

Do you think these changes to Title X are a good idea? Do you think the new procedures regarding doctor-patient conversation would be ethical? Do you think these changes will be approved or met with legal resistance?

  1. I am a pro-life for sure! With that said though, doctors have to be able to inform the parent of the health of their child. I think cutting funds though is a good idea, just because we as a country should not be funding something that is killing an innocent human life.

  2. Holding back funding for a doctor that’s doing their job is wrong. You should be able to trust a doctor to give you all of your options. A doctor shouldn’t choose money over providing for their patients.

  3. I believe the other services they provide are just a cover up. Abortions are where they make the big bucks. I am usually in favor of cutting funding overall, and I definitely am in favor of this cut. People need have some self responsibility. People have an idea in their head that the government is their savior and they will always be there for them no matter what they do. They will definitely be resisted.

  4. In my opinion, the changes to Title X are an awful idea. Women should always have the option to do what they please with their bodies and abortions are included in that list. However, even a pro-life person can see the benefits in having the other services provided by Planned Parenthood. These services could prevent unwanted pregnancies from happening in the first place. I think doctors should be able to explain every option available to pregnant women and this will definitely be met with resistance.

  5. In my opinion Title X is a bad idea. There needs to be more funding towards Planned Parenthood. There is estimated on any given day that there is 438,000 children in foster care. Without Planned Parenthood that number will rise drastically. I think Title X will be met with legal actions to stop it. In my opinion, planned Parenthood is very important in any given nation.
