On Thanksgiving night on November 22, 2018 in a Birmingham - area mall in Alabama, a police officer shot and killed Emantic Bradford Jr. During a Black Friday shopping event, when  there were reports of an active shooter. Emanitc Bradford Jr. was at the mall shopping in the middle of the incident. Bradford had a carry permit to have a gun and  had his firearm out attempting to help with the possible active shooting. Police officers mistook him for the active shooter before shooting him in the back. Some of the witnesses at the mall that night said, police officers told him multiple times to put down his gun, yet he failed to do so. After several warnings, he was shot. On Tuesday, February 5th, it came out that the police officer that shot Emantic Bradford Jr. would not be charged criminally for his actions.

I think that it is a good thing that the police officer is not getting charged. It is unfortunate for Emantic Bradford Jr. and his family however, the police officer who shot him was just doing his job to protect himself and other shoppers in the mall. This incident could possibly affect our nation’s gun laws and law enforcement.

Do you think that citizens with a permit should be allowed to carry their firearm in shopping centers on big shopping days like Black Friday? Do you think that the police officer should get charged for this shooting? How do you think that this incident will affect any of our nation’s gun laws?

  1. It is definitely a risk bringing a gun in on such a busy shopping day. If the eye witnesses are right and the police told him to put the gun down then they had a right to take action when he didn't listen. This is just going to add to the controversy in the world about gun laws.

  2. His failure to take orders from the proper authorities ultimately resulted in the death of this man, if eye witnesses are correct. It is unfortunate for this man and his family, but the officer had to take the necessary precautions to ensure the safety of the others in the building. It was a mistake and a sad situation. This could possibly add fuel to the fire.

  3. People shouldn't have to be afraid of carrying weapons, especially if they have permits. This is a terrible situation. I just wish we could find out why the man didn't put up his gun. It is smart to carry a firearm in places like that because there was an active shooting there. The police officer thought he was doing the right thing, but he killed an innocent man instead. He should be held accountable before other people abuse their power. It is a scary time in this country. Law abiding citizens are going to become scared of defending themselves and others if situations like this continue to happen. I don't think this will affect gun laws in any way; it was just a terrible accident.

  4. There is no reason that someone with a permit should not be aloud to carry their weapon. If the officer did follow protocol then he should not be punished. This will only re-ignite the gun control up roar.

  5. I think that as long as the person possesses the correct permits and follows all the regulations that they should be able to bring them anywhere. The law says that they can and makes no special instances to which they cannot. I don't think that the officer should be charged, he may not have had to kill him, but he was still just doing his job and was acting on what he thought was best. As far as the gun rights fight goes, I feel like this will just feed the gun control lobbyists more fuel for their fire.

  6. I suppose if it is lawful to do so a person with the correct permits should be able to wield their weapon wherever they see fit. I can understand why the police believed this man to be the shooter; he failed to drop his weapon when asked. I do have to wonder though how this “shoot first, ask questions later” tactic applies to citizens who are hearing impaired. People make mistakes often, but this officer’s mistake cost an innocent man his life. Although he may have had good intentions, I do believe he should face consequences. His punishment will hopefully influence other police officials to act with caution. This is definitely an interesting discussion piece for our already heated gun debate. Is it worth it to have a weapon to defend yourself if using it when endangered puts you in more danger?
