The US and the Taliban Have Begun Making Significant Peace Negotiations by Jesse F.

Recently, US officials and members of the Taliban made unprecedented strides in peace talks. Both sides have agreed to a general deal that would involve the Taliban ensuring that Afghan territory is never used by terrorists, and one that could involve US forces finally pulling out of the region.
Zalmay Khalilzad, the chief US negotiator, said that for this deal to work, the Taliban must agree to a cease-fire and direct peace talks with the Afghan government, which the group has always refused in the past.

Additionally, the Afghan government has been concerned that the US and the Taliban may agree to a deal that the government does not agree with, such as potentially changing the government structure in the country, and perhaps even including the Taliban in such a structure. Afghan president Ashraf Ghani has insisted that any discussions involving the Afghan government should be done between the government and the Taliban alone.
These peace negotiations are only preliminary at this point, and the particular details of the agreement will be determined in the future, as well as if this deal will actually be made and kept in the end.

Will the US, Afghanistan, and the Taliban eventually make productive and lasting peace negotiations? What do you think about US troops leaving Afghanistan? Is negotiating with the Taliban a good idea? And if these negotiations were to succeed, how might they affect the future of Afghanistan and the Middle East as a whole?

  1. It's kind of hard to say if lasting peace negotiations can be made with a radical group like the Taliban. I think efforts should be made towards that goal, but in the end if it is not working, there's no need in wasting time on it. Everyone can't always get along so sometimes you just have to deal with issues as they arise.

  2. Hopefully at some point in the near future, we can make a peaceful negotiation with the Taliban. Pulling our troops outside of Afghanistan is not a bad idea at all. Eventually, they need to start figuring out things on their own. Negotiations will be good for our relationship with them. Hopefully, we will one day not have to worry about innocent people dying in the Middle East.

  3. I hope that our government can cooperate and try to negotiate peace. It is difficult to determine how that will effect Afghanistan and the Middle East, but I hope it will be beneficial to have peace for both sides of the isle.

  4. It is uncertain whether or not any lasting peace negotiations will be formed between the United States and the Taliban. I do find it quite ironic that both groups are agreeing to peace talks considering that less than a decade ago they were fighting one another. Despite this, I do think that there is potential for these peace talks to be successful and beneficial to both groups.I think the talks could signify a new shift in diplomatic policy in the Middle East.
