Tensions Between Protesters Rise in the Capital by Peyton O.

https://www.cnn.com/2019/01/19/us/teens-mock-native-elder-trnd/index.html

A video surfaced over the weekend at the Indigenous Peoples March in Washington DC that is causing outrage across America. In the video, a teenager is seen smiling in the face of an elderly Native American man while he plays a drum and chants. Americans perceived the video as that the teenager in the video was mocking the man while other students stood in the background chanting along mockingly. However, a statement from Nick Sandmann, the boy in the video, says otherwise. Sandmann stated that him and his classmates were there for the march and were supporting it. As for the video, Sandmann explains that he was not mocking the man, but trying to deescalate the situation. He talked about how many other people at the march were yelling racial slurs and harassing his classmates. Him and his classmates decided to began yelling their school cheers, to drown out the hateful words. This was all confirmed in a new video that surfaced early this week. He said that the man, later identified as Nathan Phillips, approached him, and began chanting in his face, mocking his classmates cheers. Research on Phillips has also proved that he is a paid protester and was only at the march for that reason.

  1. Who do you believe is telling the truth? Sandmann or Phillips?
  2. Is there a reason for the Indigenous Peoples March? Are Indigenous people treated any different than other Americans?
  3. Other political marches occurred that afternoon, such as March for Life. Do you believe these protests are changing any laws or regulations within our government?

  1. It seems to me like both of them were telling the main truth. Neither of them did anything wrong. The black herbrew isrealites were screaming curse words, racist words, and anti-LGBTQ words at the native american and students. Sandmann was threatened by many celebrities when he didn't do anything wrong. I don't think March for Life has a large effect. It seems like peaceful protesting doesn't get attention anymore. I think it's clear Indigenous people are treated differently, just like anyone else. This is clear because the black men were harassing mainly the white students instead of the indian man

  2. It's hard to tell who is telling the truth in this matter. Even if this situation isn't what a lot of us are seeing, many things have come out about the school like a picture of the basketball team screaming at an African American player on the opposing team, with one student even wearing blackface.
I believe there is a reason for the indigenous march. Native Americans are treated differently in some cases. We took their ancestors land and they have the right to march to show pride in their ancestry.
Protesting can show immediate effects like teachers protesting for higher pay. But in some cases, like March For Our Lives, the effect isn't immediately seen and isn't always what we thought it would be. I do think March For Our Lives is going to show an impact in the next couple of years through votes. Students in high school are graduating and are more likely to vote because of the influence of March For Our Lives.

  3. There is a 2-hour livestream that shows the context behind everything going on at this event. I've been trying to find it so I can watch it myself, but I've heard from people who have watched it that Philips's statements about the students were not true, and that Philips was apparently the one who confronted Sandmann, not the other way around like Philips and many in the media have claimed.

But that livestream is likely the way we can actually tell more about what actually happened. As Douglas said, there are more things that have come out concerning the school and its students, though from what I've seen, the students wearing "blackface" may have actually been just playing their part in a "Blackout" game, which is apparently a normal thing that has nothing to do with race (not that I would know, because I don't know much about sports).

No matter what you think happened, I think there is at least one group involved that is clearly at fault. There are some people I have seen on social media that appear to be literally calling for the doxxing/death of the students. Even some news reporters have been caught saying things of the sort about those students. This was so bad that the school apparently canceled classes one day due to safety concerns. No matter who's to blame here, we can surely all agree that calling for further violence and intrusions of privacy isn't going to help the situation.

  4. I feel like either Mr. Sandmann or Mr. Phillips could both be telling the truth. There could be many reason why they decided to march, but I believe that if you are trying to get your protest noticed, you dont need Black Hebrew Israelite just throwing around nasty slang to Americans, that is just a good way to get your tires slashed. Indigenous people are treated different than other Americans. Protesting if done right, could be a good way to get congress to consider reviewing their laws.

  5. Ok so i have only watched one video about this, which i know i should have watched more, but from that point of view it seemed to me like the teenager was mocking him and all up in the mans personal space. I really feel that the teens seemed to be causing a lot more of a scene than the man who was simply beating a drum and chanting. As for the death wishes, i think that is a little absurd because, no one was injured and there were no real problems with them having a peaceful disagreement.
