When President Trump took office, him and his administration took action to delay these decisions. He claimed that the issue needed further study and urged the Supreme Court to revisit the issue. While the issue was being studied further, Trump directed the military to return to the policy that was in place before President Obama was elected.
During March of 2018 the administration announced that it was revisiting the policy. The new policy prevents transgenders from serving unless they serve in their biological sex. Also they are not allowed to undergo a gender transition. The exception to this new policy is the men and women who are currently serving in the military and began their gender transition during the Obama-era rules.
The supreme court lifted nationwide injunctions blocking the new policy. The vote was split 5 to 4 with the 5 conservatives voted in support and the 4 liberals voted against the policy.
What are your thoughts on transgenders serving in the military? What are the pros and cons? Do you agree with the Supreme Court? What would should be done about this issue?
I think that if somebody wants to serve for our country, we should let them. Taking away people opportunities just because they're different isn't right.
ReplyDeleteI have nothing against transgender people serving in our military. Pro, another person serving in the armed forces. Con, having to adjust bathrooms, and other ways to accommodate them. I neither agree nor disagree with the courts decision. I believe that there inst much they could do, they could protest if they chose.
ReplyDeleteI believe that if you want to fight and die for our country you should be allowed to. But transgenders should get no special treatment than other service members. I believe if you want to and your old enough to you can serve in the military.
ReplyDeleteI believe that anyone who wishes to serve their country should be able to. The pros are more people in the military and increased equality. The con (although I strongly believe this is hardly a significant setback) is the medical costs of gender transitioning. The military provides many rewards/benefits for joining (ex. help with a higher education) so I don't think that this particular medical procedure is any different. I do not agree with the Supreme Court. I think this should be repealed and reconsidered.
ReplyDeleteI think the ban is awful, saying someone cannot protect their own country because of who they are is incredibly disrespectful. The pros would be more people protecting America and more equality for transgenders. Some cons could possibly be increasing awareness and education about trans people and providing protection from bigoted military officials. I do not agree with the Supreme Court and think this decision should be reconsidered.
ReplyDeletePersonally, I believe that someone should be able to serve for their country regardless of whether or not they are transgender. I don’t agree with the Supreme Court at all on this decision.
