Who Is Next? by Caroline J.

Being the Chief of Staff to the President of the United States is no easy task. Although the difficulties of this job have most certainly increased with our current President Donald Trump. The obvious choice for the President was Nick Ayers. Ayers is the current chief of staff to the vice president of the United States Mike Pence. Ayers would have replaced John F. Kelly. Surprisingly, Nick Ayers declined the job. Sources who are close to him have said he will be leaving Washington, and the current administration, all together at the end of the year. He will supposedly be returning to Georgia to spend more time with his family. Many people do not believe the excuse of “more family time”. It has been speculated that the President is too hard to manage, and Ayers wanted no part of it. Many have said that Trump was unprepared for this turn of events and that he does not have a second option in mind.

President Trump has made a statement saying that he will fill the position in the next week or two. He choice for Chief of staff will have a great deal of work on their hands. Assuming that they stick with the job, they will have to manage Trump during the current political battles he will be facing in Washington, but looking past that, the next Chief of Staff will have to help assist during the next presidential election.

Why do you think Ayers really declined the job offer? Was Trump expecting to be told no? Who will be Trump’s choice? What do you think the next Chief of Staff would have to do to keep our hard to handle president in check?

John Kelly

Nick Ayers

  1. I believe that he does want to spend more time with his family, but that isn't the only reason. I think it is a big task to deal with the president and other officials. I think Trump should have been ready for a "no" with the recent turn of events. I don't know who he will pick, but the person he does pick needs to realize what they are getting into and be prepared for it.

  2. I'm sure he wants to have more family time; however, he most likely had more reasons to decline the offer. Trump expects the unexpected and probably didn't take the news too badly. I don't know who Trump will pick, but the Chief of Staff always needs to protect the president.

  3. Although I have the upmost respect for President Trump, I can see where someone might not want to be Trump's Chief of Staff. I feel like Donald Trump would be kind of hard to manage/work for since he can be a bit of a loose cannon on Twitter and in the media. It would be a honor to work for Trump, just maybe not as his Chief of Staff. I do think that as smart and brilliant as he is, his next Chief of Staff will be great!

  4. Given the President's increasingly erratic behavior and his unwillingness to compromise with Congress, I am not surprised that Trump is having trouble finding someone capable and willing to fill this important role. In the midst of Trump's push for his wall, nonetheless. I have absolutely no idea who Trump will pick to fill this position, but more importantly, I don't know of anyone who would even consider accepting.

  5. Ayes probably declined the job offer because he did not want to be in that position and deal with all of the various issues. He probably does want to spend time with his family, but that is probably not the prime reason. I do not think that the president was expecting to get a no for an answer. I am not sure who Trump will pick for the job, but I do know that they will need to be well- prepared for the job. They will need to know what they are getting themselves into and be able to handle the task properly.
