Mayoral Debate by Logan W.

On October 23, 2018 the Ozark High School AP government and politics class along with KDYN  hosted the Ozark Mayoral Debate between two of the three candidates. These two candidates were Roxie Hall and Steve Whitaker. T.R. McNutt was unable to make it to the debate because of and eye surgery. During this debate Roxie and Steve gave many interesting points on many different topics. These topics went from increasing entrepreneurship in Ozark to the planned Ozark Marina.

I believe that Steve Whitaker won the debate and should become Mayor. Steve gave many solid and well backed up arguments and his arguments helped change people's minds at the debate. Many going into the debate were for Roxie as determined by our entrance polls, however our exit polls tell a different story and actually brought our polls very close. Even though i do believe Steve won the debate, he did say some unprofessional comments that most likely hurt him more than helped him. The debate was very interesting and has changed many people's opinions on who should be mayor of Ozark.

Who do you think won the Mayoral Debate?
Did you believe Steve’s comments helped or hurt him?
Who do you believe will be the best choice for mayor out of the three choices?

  1. I believe that Steve Whitaker won the debate because his responses were better thought out. I think that his comments hurt him because they were unprofessional. I believe that T.R. McNutt will be the best choice because he has the experience and I think that is very important.

  2. In my opinion, I think that Steve Whitaker won the Mayoral Debate, purely for his obvious preparation in studying his opinions. I think that Mr. Whitaker's opinions were eye-opening for many in this town, and overall better for the health and prosperity of the city. His personal comments however, stood to hurt his political agenda. Although calling out people who seem to be doing bad things is the right thing to do, it did not help him get elected.

  3. Although both Steve Whiteaker and Roxie Hall both had good points, Mr. Whiteaker won the debate. He wasn't trying to use his personal relationships with the people of Ozark to get votes. However, Mrs. Hall was more professional in some ways than Mr. Whiteaker, but he made up for it with his well thought out responses. Some of the comments he made did hurt him. I think they would all be good choices, but the experience that McNutt has gives him an advantage.

  4. Steve and Roxie both had some good, solid arguments. Steve I think, won the debate. He had fresh ideas. It will be interesting to see who wins the runoffs, and what type of effect this will have on the town of Ozark.

  5. I believe both candidates made valid points, but clearly Steve's did not win him anything. He is not apart of the run off that will take place in December. I believe that Roxie will ultimately win the mayoral election.

  6. Mr. Whiteaker won the debate. Although I do believe most of his comments did help him, pointing fingers and bringing petty things up from the past were not helpful to his campaign. Both candidates should have been more professional in this aspect.

  7. I believe Mr. Whiteaker won the debate. He was more prepared which led to his victory. However, some ideas were unrealistic, and his comments did hurt him because the bad things you say stick with people more than the good things you say. I do not prefer a certain person as our mayor, but I do think Mrs. Hall will win the runoff election and become the mayor.

  8. I believe that Steve Whitaker won the debate. However, I think some of his comments hurt him and caused audience members to question his ideas. Ozark would benefit the most with Steve as mayor, but he could cause controversy with his opinions.

  9. I believe that Steve won the debate. The ideas he presented made a lot of sense and supported his argument well. However, I believe his earlier comments hurt him. I think he made a lot of enemies within the city counsel and some of his comments towards them steered voters away from him. Although I believe that Steve would make a good mayor, I believe that McNutt is the best option because he would communicate well with the counsel and hasn't slandered them like Steve.

  10. Though some of his comments hurt him, I believe Steve Whiteaker won the debate. Despite this, I think Roxie Hall will end up becoming the mayor.

  11. I feel like his comments didnt hurt him, people knew what he has been saying. I feel like it kinda helped him. As always I feel like Steve won the debate, but I feel like Roxie would be the better Mayor.
