Florida Governor's Race by Daniel W.

One of the most dramatic campaigns in the 2018 midterms has finally ended. On Tuesday night Fox News confirmed that Republican Ron DeSantis would defeat Democrat Andrew Gillum in the gubernatorial race in Florida. Desantis and Gillum both beat establishment candidates that were favored to win, but have completely opposite views. Gillum supports impeaching President Trump, raising the minimum wage to $15, and abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Desantis, on the other hand, has virtually the same stance on every issue as Donald Trump. Many political analysts have said the only reason he won the election was that President Trump fought to ensure Desantis would win. Andrew Gillum had many famous supporters, including Bernie Sanders. Gillum made history not only by being the first black gubernatorial nominee in the state of Florida but also by espousing an obstinate progressive agenda and just losing by half of a percent. Most Democratic nominees in this midterm appeared more moderate than they really are in an effort to steal votes. Gillum’s approach nearly paid off and might have caused a revolutionary turn for Florida.

Do you believe it is smarter to be completely open about your opinion if you are running for an office, or is it smarter to appear more neutral and say what more people want to hear? How much of an effect do you believe Trump really had on the voters in Florida? Do you believe far right or far left ideas are becoming more accepted in the United States?

  1. I think it is important for politicians to stay true to their policies and what they believe in. Staying neutral in an effort to win votes can work in theory, but even Aaron Burr did not succeed with this approach. Even if Democrats would have won Florida, it wouldn't have been with truly democratic morals, which is what matters in the end. It is more important to win with morals true to your political agenda than to only run for the sake of running.

  2. Politicians should speak the truth. They should not tell their constituents what they want to hear. I think Donald Trump had a great influence on the voters. Like who would not listen to Mr. Trump?

  3. It is very important for politicians to be honest about their true beliefs and their agenda while they are in office. I think Trump's efforts to persuade people to vote did have a big influence. Because of the media, It could be believed that far left ideas are being more accepted but, America is more moderate and in the middle.

  4. As far as I have seen, being transparent with one's views has typically shown to be the most effective way for politicians to win elections--Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump were clear examples of candidates getting support for their strong views.
While I am sure that Trump's support for DeSantis likely influenced the outcome of the Florida election, I do not think that it was vital to his win; however, Trump's politics have probably bolstered conservatives' views across America generally since he became president, and that may have influenced this election as well as the others across the country.
I think that it is clear that more radical views on both political sides are becoming more common; protests and other movements across the US have shown what are now becoming much more radical liberal views, and those protests have radicalized many conservatives reciprocally (not that the vice versa doesn't also happen). This has become further exemplified by the political races and decisions in our government that now seem to be completely judged by party lines instead of genuine beliefs--and those who "betray" their party's doctrine are yelled at and cursed by the masses.

  5. I think it’s better to be completely open with your opinion because it leaves no room for grey area’s. I think he may have had an effect on how many voters went to vote. I think that far right ideas are starting to become more accepted.
