2018 Ozark Mayoral Debate

On October 23, 2018, two of the three Mayoral candidates for the Ozark Mayor position attended the Mayoral Debate. This debate was hosted by the Ozark High School AP Government and Politics class as well as the KDYN/KLYR radio station, and was held at the OHS Performing Arts Center.

Steve Whiteaker and Roxie Hall shared their opinions over some of the biggest local issues. These issues included expanding entrepreneurship, promoting economic growth, and the usage of city funds. As the candidates spoke, it gave the citizens of Ozark a clearer and more informed view of the candidates. However, T.R. McNutt was not in attendance due to a conflict in scheduling. Armed with this knowledge, the citizens of Ozark took to the polls, on November 6, to decide who the next Mayor of Ozark would be.

I believe that Steve Whiteaker won the debate. His views were very clear and compelling. I believe that his plan to draw in business from the interstate was very good, and his overall plans were very in touch with what Ozark needed. Roxie Hall also shared that she believed improving our city was very important. However her approach seemed to be less in tune with the needs of Ozark.

Who do you believe won the debate? Why?
Do you believe that T.R.’s absence from the debate caused him to lose support in the community?
Based off of the debate, who do you think will be the best Mayor and why?

  1. I feel like Steve won the debate. I felt like he has some good points! I feel like since the election has occurred and he is still in the running, I feel like he still has a surprisingly chance to win! I feel like Roxie would be the best Mayor, I feel like she is a people person, she knows many people and she would be able to work with the Aldermans.

  2. McNutt's absence, I believe lost him some support from the community. Steve and Roxy both had good plans for our town of Ozark. Since Steve gave actual examples as to what exactly he would do as mayor, this helped him out in the debate.

  3. I felt as if Mrs. Hall won the debate. McNutt's absence probably did hurt him with some voters, but he still has his group that supports him. I did like how Roxy and Steve both explained exact plans they have for our town.

  4. I agree that Mr. Whiteaker won the debate, but many could argue that Mrs. Hall won because she retained a lot of her supporters. Looking back at it, I don't believe it hurt McNutt because Mrs. Hall's supporters were all in with her and he wouldn't have been able to change their minds.

  5. I believe that Steve Whitaker won the mayoral debate. He has clear views and wants the community to succeed. He also points out that both of the other candidates have been in politics in ozark for awhile and have done almost nothing. - Logan Ward

  6. Steve won the debate but I think that Roxie would make a better mayor because she is more personable and is friendly with the people of Ozark. I feel like people know more about her and trust her a little more which is why she had so many avid supporters who weren’t going to change their vote no matter what Steve said. At the time I thought McNutt’s absence would hurt him but that obviously wasn’t the case.
