During a CBS “60 Minutes” interview on Sunday, President Trump announced that he was disinterested in abandoning the U.S. arms deal with Saudi Arabia despite the disappearance of Washington Post contributor Jamal Khashoggi. Saudi Arabia is currently America's No. 1 weapons buyer, accounting for almost 18% of total U.S. arms sales between 2013 and 2017. The Saudis have purchased nearly $9 billion worth of arms from the United States but is nowhere near the $110 billion sales projection President Trump has spoken of. The State Department announced that Riyadh has the intentions to purchase the projected amount of arms but the money hasn't come through yet.

Trump cited national relations as the reason for refusing to potentially place sanctions on Saudi Arabia due to Khashoggi's disappearance. Saudi Arabia's oil empire is one of America's most crucial partners in the Middle East and large patron of American defense companies. Sanctions would jeopardize the arms deal and possibly disrupt positive relations between the two countries. Trump additionally cited that blocking arms sales would hurt jobs in defense companies such as Lockheed, Boeing, and Raytheon. Despite this, many have criticized Trump for selling arms to Saudi Arabia. However, under the Obama administration the U.S. offered over $115 billion in weapons to Saudi Arabia.

Do you feel that the arms deal will be beneficial to both the U.S. and Saudi Arabia? How will the arms deal affect relations between both nations? Is the arms deal even a good idea?

  1. I believe the arms deal will benefit both countries, but the U.S needs to be careful with how much we give the Saudis. We don't need Saudi Arabia to threaten the U.S. in the future.

  2. This arms deal has its pros and cons. Hopefully this arms deal will do good for both countries. The productions of the weapons for Saudi Arabia be good business for defense companies.

  3. I believe that the arms deal with benefit the U.S. now, but could potentially harm us later. If Saudi Arabia chooses to attack and invade another country with the weapons bought from the U.S., chances are that the rest of the world is not going to be happy with the United States. However, I think that the United State's relations with Saudi Arabia will be strengthened by the arms deal.

  4. The arms deal is beneficial, but with all good things come consequences. The U.S. will benefit majorly by selling the weapons, but the Saudi's could turn around and start using these weapons in negative ways. Also, this would be beneficial and needed for the defense companies.

  5. This is a great deal for Saudi Arabia; they are providing us with enough monetary compensation that our administration turns a blind eye to a violation of human rights. Assuming the projected financial goal is met, I still do not see this as a good idea. The U.S., a long-standing self-proclaimed upholder of democratic ideals, citing sales projections and a loss of jobs seems to suggest that our morals can be bought. Also as many of the other comments have observed Americans should worry about what these weapons could potentially be used for.
