Trump v. Hawaii by Grace F.

The State of Hawaii charged President Trump with imposing an unconstitutional “Muslim ban” when he issued a travel ban on six Muslim-majority nations, claiming that it was illegal based on federal immigration laws and procedure rules. It could be argued that this all stemmed from the infamous terrorist attack of September 11, 2001 - the beginning of the “War on Terror” and most hideous Islamophobia the United States has ever seen.

In a close ruling of 5-4, Chief Justice John Roberts upheld Trump's order; he said: “The admission and exclusion of foreign nationals is a fundamental sovereign attribute exercised by the government’s political departments largely immune from judicial control.”. “Plaintiffs challenge the entry suspension based on their perception of its effectiveness and wisdom, but the Court cannot substitute its own assessment for the Executive’s predictive judgments on such matters.” (So, basically, there’s nothing we can do about it? That doesn’t really sound like justice to me… more like we need more amendments to our system of government… ) In the end, the deciding evidence for President Trump’s innocence was that the Proclamation was legally within the bounds of the President’s power, and satisfied the judges’ rational basis review for a sufficient national security justification.

So, what can you deduce from this? Were President Trump’s actions with the travel ban Islamophobic, xenophobic, or an unfortunate side-effect of keeping our country safe?  How does this reflect on a nation that was forged as a land of immigrants?

  1. Donald Trump is not Islamophobic, he is simply just trying to protect our country. I do not understand why people call this matter a 'Muslim Ban." He banned the immigration from six Muslim dominate countries, NOT Muslims. Trump never flat out said that he wants to ban all Muslims. This reflects on how are officials care for the safety and well being of our country.

  2. It is to the point now in our nation that we are dividing ourselves from everyone it feels like. There has been lots of division about the travel ban. This is a bad reflection on the nation because it is dividing us.

  3. President Trump's travel ban is not any kind of "phobia". Liberals love using words that end with phobia, and I believe it is way overused and an insult to people that actually have phobias. It is common for a president to place a travel ban; Obama and Clinton each had six separate travel bans. It has been known for a long time that Trump would place a ban. After the Orlando terror attack, Trump said, "When I'm elected, I will suspend immigration from areas of the world where there is a proven history of terrorism against the United States, Europe or our allies until we fully understand how to end these threats."

  4. Maybe from Trumps point of view it seemed like the right thing to do, but as an outsider, I don't see it like that. Not all muslims are against Christianity or wish death upon anyone American. Most want to just come to America to live a free life.

  5. I believe that President Trump’s actions were just the side-effect of keeping our country safe. The countries he banned are overall hostile to America. Therefore, if he can reduce terrorist attacks by banning immigrants from those countries, it is just a side-effect we will have to deal with to gain more safety. This can reflect the United States in a negative light. We are a country built on immigration, and now we are banning certain countries from coming over. However, the travel bans can help cut down terrorist attacks and keep America safe. Therefore, in my opinion, these actions are necessary and justified.

  6. I think President Trump's decision came from two sides. One side being to protect our country by making a decision he believed was right. With the other side coming from wanting to please the people. A lot of people wanted the travel ban put into place. I think he wanted to please his supporters and put the travel ban into place. I also believe that his words got twisted by different media sources. He simply put a travel ban on 6 different countries that are very likely to attack the U.S. The main ethnicity of those countries just happened to be dominantly Muslim. President Trump is just trying to protect our country.
