Kavanaugh, a Hopeless Partisan or Impartial Jurist? By Kalli Bonds

On the opening day of Judge Brett M. Kavanaugh’s confirmation hearings, he was accused of being a “narrow-minded partisan” by Senate Democrats. Kavanaugh was the Supreme Court pick of President Donald J. Trump. Protestors were dragged out of the hearing room in handcuffs. Democrats, who were angry about the denial of permission to see records of Judge Kavanaugh, started the argument minutes after the hearing began. Hours after being ruthlessly criticized, Judge Kavanaugh had a turn with the microphone to defend himself as an “impartial jurist and affable family man.” Kavanaugh claimed to be a pro-law judge. He is not a pro-defendant or pro-plaintiff judge, nor is he a pro-defense or pro-prosecution judge. Despite Judge Kavanaugh’s effort to pacify the angry Democrats, they continually protested and dominated the hearing. By the end of the day, approximately 70 people had been arrested.

This was a very chaotic start to the beginning of Judge Kavanaugh’s journey; however, I believe that he composed himself very well and will do this country a lot of good. He seems to be a very honest and stand-up man. Even though many disagree with where he stands on certain matters, I firmly believe that he will do his best to serve justice to the American people.

What is your opinion of President Donald J. Trump’s Supreme Court nominee, Brett M. Kavanaugh? Do you think that the Democratic party overreacted during his hearing? How do you think his confirmation will affect our country?

  1. President Trump should be able to choice who he wants. The Democratic Party is overreacting because then they wont have an equal party in the Supreme Court. With more sway in the Republicans then more cases will be ruled with a more republican approach

  2. Kavanaugh seems like a good pick. I believe that the Democrats are overreacting since it is not their pick. Everyone needs to take a chill pill and give him a chance. This confirmation hearing will keep things interesting in our country as the confirmation continues.

  3. I believe that the democrats did overreact during the hearing. Of course they will not agree with Trumps choice, but they should have respectfully disagreed. I think that Kavanaugh is a good choice.

  4. Like usual the democrats entirely overreacted to a decision that president Trump has made. I think Kavanaugh is a great choice for Supreme Court Justice given that he is a constitutionalist. It is justifiable that the democrats could disagree with the President's choice, but they entirely made fools of themselves during the hearings and instead chose to insult Kavanaugh.- Gavin S.

  5. I think the mass hysteria is slightly over the top; however, I also think it should be noted what an important decision this is and how long the effects of his pick will last. It is easy to understand why Democrats and Republicans alike would want this to be a sound and well thought out choice. As for my opinion on Kavanaugh, I do not agree with his ideals, but I can appreciate his composure and poise. -Bethany F.

  6. Because all we have to judge this man's potential for being a just judge in the Supreme Court is his record of writings and decisions as a judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit since 2006, I base my opinion on these (directly); I am frankly frightened and unimpressed with his nomination.
A major cause for concern on my part is his repeated comment that "Judges must interpret the law, not make the law." This is dangerous because that way of thinking prohibits our Constitution from evolving and adapting to fit the growing and changing needs of We The People. Especially in such a powerful position, I value and desire a judge that truly understands and respects how each decision he/she makes plays a part in shaping our great democracy.
Beyond this fundamental misunderstanding of our foundational document and his responsibilities as judge, his track record shows him to be very partial to federal government (especially in relation to presidential power and national security) and not very concerned with individual liberties.
This was clearly exemplified when he found no First Amendment problem with an official requirement that federal grantees adopt a pledge against their will as a condition of receiving federal funding, but deemed a rule requiring “net neutrality” to violate the First Amendment rights of internet service providers.
Thus, I think the dissenting members of the Democratic party who exercised their rights to freedom of speech/ expression and freedom to petition the government were not out of range on what concerned, active citizens can do to make change and bring attention to important issues.
Likewise, if he were to be confirmed as the new Supreme Court Justice, I would be unsettled about the prospects of future court decisions and how that will affect myself, my fellow citizens, and our world.

  7. Dems are overreacting but it's not a bad thing. If you have a strong opinion about something and you're scared a decision will affect the future badly, of course you're gonna overreact. It's basically their jobs. If they were to just sit back, nothing would get done and everything would benefit republicans.

  8. I do not think the democrats overreacted. It has been known that President Trump's staff picks have not turned out to be the most reliable in recent weeks, so I can see the reason for worry when this pick is permanent, even after Trump leaves office. A supreme court judge pick is a big deal, and it is troubling to know that the people don't have access to his records.
