Hurricane Florence’s Destruction to Our Nation by Elizabeth B.

Hurricane Florence is hitting all around our nation, and its death toll is growing by the minute.  Rescue crews have already pulled out hundreds of people from their flooding homes.  Now, North Carolina people are bracing themselves for the next stage of this horrific hurricane.  The concern that they are looking at, at this point, is the widespread river flooding.  The head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has already said he believes the death toll will rise as the water rises.  With this being said, FEMA is ready to move in at any moment to help with the relief efforts.  They are prepared with food, water, helicopters, and basic needs.

All North Carolina can do at this point is prepare.  The authorities have already issued an immediate evacuation of people living within a mile of the Cape Fear River and the Little River.  According to furniture store owner, John Rose, this is the first time that the state has ever had to do this, but they are ready for what they are about to encounter.  The state has already had 2 feet of rain and are expecting more and more each day until the hurricane hits.

The nation is being greatly affected by the aftermath of it as well.  Economy is going to lower in this part of the country, and it will cause people to move to other states.  The hurricane is going to stop people from going to the mall or restaurants and it will temporarily shut down manufacturing plants.  Not only this, but the estimated cost of damage to homes is $20 billion dollars.

Where else will this horrific hurricane hit?  Do you believe FEMA will be able to do enough to help the families that may lose everything?  Does our nation need to be looking at the cost of the relief?

  2. I think hurricane season has a few more months before it comes to a end, I believe that there will be more hurricanes. I believe FEMA will somewhat help out, but with hurricane season having two more months, they are going to try to do the bare minimum so they can put back for a catastrophic event. I think our nation should look for the cost of relief, but while we are in need of help, I think we should look to our neighbors and local communities to help out with the relief. *Sorry I had to delete my first comment, I forgot a few words!*

  3. Ok so i agree with Daniels above comment and I also agree that since hurricane season is not yet over that they should save some of the money. However, I feel that people can help themselves more than organizations or the government can. When living in areas like that there is always a chance of those kinds of things happening and in my honest opinion families should have been more prepared and even though readapting to a new place will not be easy they can find jobs and make a new life rather than having pity parties and expecting tons of help. The way we can help these people the most is by offering them jobs, rent/temporary housing, and making sure that they can get an education in their new conditions. :)

  4. I think that the majority of the East Coast will be affected by this hurricane in some way. I believe that FEMA will do its best to provide for the affected families. However it is hard for the families who lose everything because they have nothing to start over with. I think the nation should look at the cost of relief so that we are equipped and ready to help those affected rebuild their life.

  5. I believe our nation needs to prepare for the cost of aid in affected areas. Many large businesses and homes will be damaged and will need to be rebuilt. These people and companies will have trouble rebuilding without government aid and money.
