Wuerl mentions resigning after having a discussion with the pope where he was asked to consider the best course of action "as we face new revelations of the extent of the horror of the clergy abuse of children and the failures in episcopal oversight." Wuerl has denied knowing of any information about accusations of McCarrick and He has also defended his overall record handling clerical abuse in Pittsburgh, while also acknowledging "errors in judgment." In his letter tuesday, the cardinal said, "At issue is how to begin effectively to bring a new level of healing to survivors who have personally suffered so much and to the faithful entrusted to our care who have also been wounded by the shame of these terrible actions and have questions about their bishop's ability to provide the necessary leadership.”McCarrick was removed from public ministry because of allegation of sexual abuse and sexual misconduct with adults from decades ago¨. McCarrick is one of the highest-ranking American leaders in the Catholic Church to be removed from ministry because of sex abuse charges. Survivors of clergy sex abuse stood in front of the Vatican embassy in Washington on Thursday and urged the Pope and the US Department of Justice to take steps to prevent more abuses and hold abusers accountable. The Survivors Network of Those Abused by Priests (SNAP) and Center for Constitutional Rights have also sent a letter to Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein demanding an "investigation and prosecution of high-level officials in the Catholic Church" for sexual crimes and cover-ups.
Should he be removed for crimes from decades ago?Should the Department of Justice interfere with the Catholic church? Does the bishop have the ability to provide the necessary leadership?

Yes, McCarrick should be removed from the public ministry. It does not matter whether the crimes were committed yesterday or if they were committed decades ago. Even if he is high-ranking, he is not above the law. The Department of Justice should be able to interfere with the Catholic church on an issue that is so large.
ReplyDeleteYes he should be removed from the ministry and the charges from the crimes should stay in order. The Department of Justice should interfere with the Catholic church, because this has been going on for awhile and nothing has been done except trying to cover it up and people just stepping down.
ReplyDeleteThis is a very controversial topic in the Catholic Church right now. McCarrick should be removed immediately from the church. He committed the crime and now he has been caught for it. So it is time for him to pay the consequences.
ReplyDeleteMcCarrick should be removed from all public ministry. People that commit these crimes should have no slack even if they are a high ranking official. He should be punished by the the Catholic church as well for committing an ungodly crime.

DeleteI believe that he should be removed for these crimes. He is a leadership position and should display proper leadership skills, be held to certain standards, and be an example for others to follow. By committing these crimes, those standards have not been upheld. I feel like the Department of Justice should interfere. While the Catholic Church is very respected and revered, no one is above the law and that includes their bishops. The bishop does not have the necessary skills to lead. He would not have allowed the sexual abuse to occur or continue to occur if he cared for the members of his church, not just locally but worldwide.
ReplyDeleteHe should be removed from the ministry, regardless of how long ago these crimes were committed. Time doesn't change the fact that he did what he did. The Department of Justice needs to interfere with this.
